Not knowing enough about where the TCU sits in the picture, I'm surprised nobody has looked at a piggy back solution that sits between the TCU and trans electronics to alter the pressure and shift times at WOT or boost levels. Also haven't seen any discussions about possibly looking into what it takes to convert it to a manual style valve body for the die hard drag racers. These were types of things that were done in early days of the auto supras when they couldn't handle any real power.

The reason you don't have much of an idea visually, is because the 'TCU' is actually located inside of or is integrated to be a part of the Mechatronic. This is my understanding.

Plus I don't have an auto so I've never even had eyes on the setup.

so far i think it shouldnt be too bad only thing im a bit worried about is the reflash but it has been done before so its not impossible.

Im going to use the stock clutch pedal which requires use of a new brake pedal.

stock slave and master are also both going to be used

as far as the actual shifter and clutch im going to skip over buying all the stock elements and buy a rogue engineering kit with clutchmasters twin disk

the drive shaft is longer on the manual cars so i think i am going to use a 17mm spacer that will save me 600$

Im sure there are little pieces here and there that are missing when i get all the things in but over all i dont think it will be hard

one more thing i just realized that the manual gears are shorter with a longer rear end but the auto gears are longer with a shorter rear end this means my car will have short trans gears and short rear end gears. This could be a problem or pretty good not sure which yet. I have a 25.7 tire on the back so the car will top out around 133mph in 4th which will be pretty awesome for 60-130 pulls im just not sure how useful that short of gears will be due to hooking with the magnified torque. i guess we will see worst case scenerio is i swap out the rear gears for 3.08s

Just make sure the little nannies are in place to satisfy the neutral/clutch depressed start and reverse stuff.

It would be great if you could get some info on the 6AT->DCT swap. I may look into doing this sometime next year. Planning to build a ST kit for the car in the next couple months.

i think youd be better off swapping in a manual over the dct it seems like those give out maybe even before our autos

Agreed on Level10's rep. In my 300zxTT days, their upgraded autos were a joke.

You're probably right and most likely that's what I'll end up doing. I still wouldn't mind seeing more info on the swap.

So how much money will it cost to develop upgrades for XI transfercase and anything else? Or is it impossible no matter how much money?

I understand some people have called level 10 and others about this. Any other ideas?

The transfer case was cracked open by Jack M over on e90post after some forum members pooled money and sent him a few used units. Jack is part of a shop which has a great deal of experience in upgrading the TC on other platforms such as Evos so his knowledge base is solid. He concluded that the TC itself is quite solid and he didn't see any obvious failure points that could be singled out and upgraded.

The actual component that fails on our TCs seems to be the actuator motor worm gear that controls the clutches within the TC. The worm gear has to act quickly when traction changes and as a result the worm gear experiences high stress loads. There are pictures in the thread on e90 of a stripped worm gear from a failed actuator motor.

At this point in auto cars the first point of weakness is the AT followed by that actuator worm gear. In manuals the first thing to fail will probably be that worm gear. Basically, worry about your transmission before your TC.

If you want to check out that thread (I can't link it, don't have the rep) search for "Transfer Case Upgrade Possibilities e90post". The valid pictures and discussion are from page 6 onward.

The problem isn't the hardware guys. This trans is hardly complicated it's a matter of electronics communicating with the upgraded hardware as always.

LOL! Maybe we can do something like World Community Grid and harness the power of all of our PC's at once?
