    Evolve vs. ESS

So a few months ago at the DOR Event at Atco, some of you might remember that LM ran his beautiful @evolve supercharged M3 (E92, DCT running 6-6.5 psi on the Rotrex) against an ESS-600 E90 M3 (IIRC, that's 6.5-7 psi on the Vortech V3 before their update).
    Video 1

    Video 2

NOW, I am very guilty to admit this but I occasionally peruse the M3P/E90 Engine/Performance sections just to see what's going on over there and if there's anything we're missing out on. Well, it was very interesting when I stumbled upon this. An LCI-E90, Silverstone Metallic, Blacked Out Headlights w/ Upgraded Angel Eyes, Black Gloss Kidneys, Window Trim + Sidemarkers, Apex ARC-8s, CF Trunk Spoilers BUT an ESS-650 supercharger kit (~8 psi on the Vortech V3).

NOW I also know it's pointless to compare xx PSI on the Rotrex vs. xx PSI on the Vortech, but I think we can all agree that this is VERY interesting to see ESS' top stock motor kit versus evolve's Stage 2 kit (producing ~600 BHP at 6-6.5 psi, while they not only have a Stage 3 kit (~625 BHP at 7-7.5 psi), AND have also commented that they would sell a non-shelf/higher power kit (~650+ BHP at 8 psi) if a customer requested since they've already tested & tuned the Rotrex up 10 psi Click here to enlarge.

From what i saw in the video's, it looked like a day full of upsets. 400 hp running down 800 hp cars, 600 hp running with 900hp, 700hp runnin low 120's..

Agreed..... Seems the higher hp cars didn't run whet you would think, while the lower hp cars performed very well

It always helps when you can hook up the power (insert infamous "spinning ain't winning" quote).... But rader's car is def running very strong and this 650 is running questionable.

My "theory" (basically reached by what I've read about S65 tuning) is that the ESS tune is setup running too aggressive, thus not achieving it's timing target and in fact harming performance because the DME is retarding timing instead. Evolve, who's got probably the best N/A tune for the S65, has possibly the best understanding on the S65 and tuning it, those making more power with a very modest amount of boost from the Rotrex, by perfecting the VANOS, Timing Targets, Fueling, etc.

Just my personal opinion but I feel like quite a few guys there either overestimated their HP OR they were running less aggressively than they should have been and paid for it. Either way, I'm REALLY looking forward to round 2.

I talked to the owner of the ESS car for a few minutes at DOR and he told me he was on racegas. If the ESS tuning is too aggressive for pump I feel like it should work well on racegas, but I have no real interest in the S65 so I haven't been following the ESS vs Evolve discussion.

    hhmm.. didnt know that!

i offered to let him drive my car after the race to see how much better it felt tuning wise and with low end tq,but he declined as he said he's already too tempted to make the switch and doesnt want to burn the $ on trying to sell the kit

Is he racing again for DOR 2? I saw ACM posted a pic of his car in their shop today on fb for a checkup.... maybe a race/track prep? I hope he comes back, its a great looking e90 m3 and would be interesting to see him run again now that we know the details on the kit
