    Drag race machine or driving machine? MotorTrend's F13 BMW M6 laptime and 1/4 mile results, disappointing Best Driver's Car 2013 finish

    When Motor Trend starts off talking about the F13 M6 with, 'Unfortunately for the M6, there's no mechanical issue to blame for its standing' you know the M6 was a letdown. A 10th place finish? Out of a possible 12? Very disappointing and indicative of the slump M is in. The cars performance certainly is not bad with a middle of the pack 6th place 1:40.52 laptime around Laguna Seca and a 12.1@123 1/4 mile time also good for a middle of the pack 6th place. Middle of the pack for the highest performance BMW available for purchase. This is unfortunately as good as it gets from BMW.

    The problem with the M6 isn't a lack of power it is the problem with all the new BMW M cars. Motor Trend states it quite succinctly, 'Save some significant brake fade on the track, the M6 functioned exactly as it was designed. Assuming, of course, that BMW intended to design a car that is too heavy, too complicated, and unable to put the power down.'

    Due to the heft of the new cars BMW is forced to compensate with big torque. Due to not being able to offer all wheel drive as the vehicles are already too heavy all that torque makes getting traction a bit difficult. Somewhat ironic that BMW M now takes the AMG approach making cars more about the straightline and power than the razor sharp responsive scalpels they made just years ago. Now it is AMG that offers the most responsive and sharpest drvier's car which also happened to set the quickest laptime in this competition.

    When has a BMW M ever been numb and isolated as part of the driving experience? When has it been more about the power of the motor than the driving experience? Do not take my word for it, "It was the same report from the road. Judges dinged the M6 for being too heavy and unsettled in corners. Moreover, the car felt numb and isolating, like there was always a barrier between you and the road. The M6 tunes out nearly every chassis response, and then tries to dial it back in to your liking."

    The new M's have become cars for short full throttle blasts (before heat soak sets in) than sustained driving performance and the connection to the driver. Porsche on the other hand lightened their cars, made them more efficient, and built them around the driving experience. All that without going to turbos under the guise of 'Efficient Dynamics' when it is really about profit margin showing it is more than possible to gain efficiency with a naturally aspirated motor. That is why they won the competition with a 991 for the second straight year.

    MotorTrend: 'BMW's illustrious M division built its name on cars that were light, nimble, communicative, and begging to be driven as hard as possible. The M6 is the antithesis of that ethos.'

    Great article. I am DYING to see what the sedan version on the E63 runs and what it's measured curb weight ends up being. The E63 wagon actually impresses me more that then SLS.

    SPOILER:
    The C7 Corvette and the 911S went head to head this week at Laguna Seca in a test that will be published next month.
    The Corvette won and was lauded for having better steering feel, handling, braking, and a faster lap time while being declared the overall winner. The C7 has toppled the 911s and the winner of the 2014 Best Driver's Car.

    So, in essence....

    THE 2014 CORVETTE WON THIS YEARS BEST DRIVER'S CAR !!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I believe the E63 4matic will be this year's best sedan, and the C63 will be next year's best.

    But seriously the AMG Wagon is sick. I can run with a Zo6 corvette or a Gt500 and smoke just about every american muscle car that is "bad ass" and still have room for the kids, my five sacks go groceries and 3 duffle bags. I'll take that any day! AMG has made it very nice in selecting a car for the family man that really wants to go fast!

    I hate watching his videos. The only thing he can drive hard is a corvette, it looked like the m6 had more in it.

    That isn't really the point though. Just because it's a GT doesn't mean it needs to be numb and drive like crap.

    People bashed the E63 M6 when that first arrived.... There are those that prefer the F12 and others that prefer the E63. But going off of what you see in a video is non sense. I have lots of seat time in a F12, and its not at all numb.

    Who bashed the E63? The main complaint was its weight not the response or feel.
