I am somewhat confident that a 4 cylinder turbo is being considered for the M2 but a final decision has yet to be made. A detuned S55 would be my favorite realistic option, however, I am still holding out hope for a NA straight six. In a car this light and low volume, I think it could meet emissions standards.
No chance of an NA straight six.

Kay Segler got the boot pretty fast by the way, he was reassigned quicker than any head of M ever.

I am just holding out a last shred of hope at this point I'd be camped outside the dealership if they did an aluminum block straight 6. It could be done if BMW wanted to, I don't think they will though as they will want to promote their modular engine architecture. I am hoping to see most if not all of the new technology on the M3/M4 filter down to the M2 in terms of suspension, differential, transmission and hopefully hydraulic steering. Kay Segler had a vision for the M brand and BMW was behind him until they saw the results of his watered down M strategy that while successful at selling more cars, weakened the brand's image as a driver focused in house tuner. They are keeping part of it though with these new M435i/M235i cars but I think that is more in reaction to Audi's A/S/RS lineup and the overall market shift than anything else.It makes it easier for consumers who know nothing about BMW's to differentiate.

I wonder if BMW really feels he weakened the M image. If they did, why do they continue to do so?

I think they feel they must segment the types of cars within each model the way Audi has done. You see this beginning with the M135i and a similar strategy with the way they have structured the packaging of the new 3 series. Individualization was decreased and model packages were substituted (Luxury/Sport/Msport). I think the more they can standardize production the larger profit margins they can achieve through economies of scale and scope when integrated across 1-4 models.

DCT and detuned S55 along with full M4 suspension, brakes and drive train.

M235i with 8AT reputedly faster than 1M around Nordschliefe.

While we're dreaming how about a 4.4 liter S65 with a 9k redline and a sub 3000 pound curb weight?

I wouldn't be surprised at all to find a detuned s55 in the m2. The m235 will have a 330hp n55, what else will they put in the m2
