I switched to Royal Purple Synchromax and it fixed my 1-2 shifting issues.

Only problem now is my 3-4 once in awhile will shift into 4 and won't go until I pull out to neutral and go back into 4.

I tried both royal purple synchromax and redline and I can tell you from experience that redline felt better Click here to enlarge

My shop switched me to MT-90 last month when I flushed all "lifetime" fluids. The 1-2 shifts (as with the rest) are noticeably smoother now. Even in 80 degree heat I find getting into 1st from neutral is very difficult until the car has warmed up a bit. Before I could easily get into 1st with the car rolling to/from a stop, but now the car must be at a complete stop to do so. After a few minutes it behaves just like before, though all other gear shifts operate effortlessly when cold. I'm sure it'll be more pronounced in the winter, but I am fine with that compromise for overall smoothness.

I'm sure many of you 6MT guys, especially drag racers, deal with the 1-2 shift grind or in most cases the gearbox not letting you shift into 2nd under WOT killing your times and making you hate what you love the most on this car, having a clutch a shifter, doing your own rev matching and revving it as high as you like without a TCU killing your fun early.

Change your gearbox oil to Red Line MT-90 75w-90. I've run the OEM tranny oil, had issues. Tried the Red Line D4 ATF, had issues, Red Line D6 ATF even worse to now the Red Line MT-90. We have a winner folks. I haven't had a single grind yet with NLS and I can finally manage to nail a full WOT quick/hard 1-2 shift. I wanted to try this oil for a long while now but held back on it way too long and I have no idea why. It doesn't solve this issue on just this platform but many others apparently as well.

    Have fun!
Thanks for posting this up! I have a 6MT FBO with meth and BMW SSK and I definitely notice that my 1-2 shifts get really notchy when on the power. I'll definitely have to look at getting this done sooner rather than later.

Just wondering though, when you said you were able to nail a WOT 1-2 quick/hard shift, are you talking about a flat/power shift or using some kind of electronic NLS with ignition cutoff?

    Thanks!

Another quick question if you don't mind. With a significantly heavier fluid, does it need to be warmed up properly before doing such hard shifts? I'm just wondering if there's any issue with smashing through the gears at WOT when the gear oil might be completely cold.

In Sydney we have night drag sessions and in winter here it's like 10C with sometimes 40-60mins in between runs due to oil downs etc.

I wouldn't be able to say that for sure. Longevity of things is proven with enough beating and time. I don't have enough of either of those, just first impressions so far. My best guess/opinion is never beat on a car with cold fluids, let them warm up, but I'm sure that one is obvious.

My warmed up 1-2 shift is terrible. The synchro will just whine against 2 and finally slip in. Worse in the cold. I tried Synchromax, refilled with OEM and ended up with RedLine. It's really the way to go.

For the longest time I thought Factory fill was actually the best stuff. Syncromax was always turning into expensive water in my gearbox.

You guys have piqued my interest, Fluid is on the way from amazon and I'll swap it out this weekend. I'll report back if there is a noticable difference over the GM synchromesh FM.

I had 285,000 miles on my 88 325is and the transmission was starting to get disgruntled, the redline MT90 is what I used too, and it sure made a big difference

I just went out for a spirited driving session. Slamming gears from 1st to 2nd at high rpms. Where I feel like it would of normally grind, the shifting was smooth. I was always skeptical thinking I was doing something wrong. My car seemed to hate going into 2nd at high rpms and fast shifting. I'm glad I tried this stuff Click here to enlarge
