    Cool Beta VTT turbos - pump/meth - 523WHP/520WTQ

Got my car back last week. Pulled out the old motor that has the upgraded cylinder head on it for a bottom end build in anticipation of bigger stuff coming soon and put a bone stock N54 motor in with 50k miles that I picked up a year ago for a huge bargain. It came from an '09 6at 535xi car.

Anywho, here's the numbers. Its running 21psi peak down low, 20psi at 6k rpm, 19psi at 6200rpm, 18psi at 6500rpm, 16.6psi at redline. Max duty cycle reached is 70%. Pushing duty cycle to 85% (additional 15%) past 6k rpm didn't result in additional boost. Timing is in the range of 10.5 to 11.5deg peak without any hint of timing corrections all the way through.

This used our pump 94 Petro Canada (formerly Sunoco) gas running the Aquamist HFS-4 setup with two 1mm nozzles and 100% meth. According to short term trims the DME is pulling out 25% through trims with two 1mm nozzles so we could probably dial it in a bit better by dropping one of the two 1mm nozzles to a 0.9 or a .8mm instead.

Numbers look really nice to me and the most this car has ever made on pump and meth so far with this much timing and boost. Boost wise there isn't any more to be had up top but I bet there's another 2-3 deg left in there on race gas. I've got a bit of E85 sitting in my garage from a trip to the US a while back so I might try that out as well but its a bit old at this stage and I may just end up dumping it Click here to enlarge

To my knowledge these should be close to the next Stage 2 Batch 2 setups but Tony (@VargasTurboTech) will fill in on any questions there. We'll see the actual Stage 2 Batch 2 dyno numbers with our tuning once they're ready and installed for testing on Tony's new test car.

    Cheers Click here to enlarge

nice numbers, but does this mean your set of turbos are better than the initial stage2 beta sets?

id definitely consider getting a set of those if we find they can hold up over the long haul.

why not tighten up thw wastegates to allow for higher top end boost if you don't want to increase the WGDC cap?

To my knowledge these are similar and very close to the S2B2 turbos but not exactly the same no. Tony will fill the details there.

In terms of boost I pushed them to 85% wgdc on my car during this testing from 70% where they are now with no additional boost produced at 6k rpm and above. Your mileage may vary.

Race gas is oxygenated too. If it pans out, dare I say, maybe we see 540-550 out of this thing?

Hey D, thanks for posting up the results. I will leave any tuning discussion go Dzenno, but my understanding is he wants to run low boost instead of really cranking on these things. These are not exactly Stage 2 batch 2, but very similar. These are using the ASR hot side from the set of cores we had, why I wanted to test these is because they use the exact same Garrett profile on the turbine wheel as Stage 2 batch 2 and we didn't have out batch 2 wheels in yet nor have a housing machined for them at the time, also we used our billet wheels for the compressor. The turbines in these are slightly larger then the stage 2 batch 2 but Dzenno is running into the exact same boost / WGDC limits as with RB TD04L's and the stage 1 batch 1's turbine on these. Meaning as we stated in the past with the housing being the limiting factor going bigger on the wheel will only help to a point, what these were built for is to test the Garrett profile and and billet compressor wheels, thats it, this exact combination will never be produced by us. As you can see they are performing very well, using the garret turbine wheel and billet compressors. We should have a test set of stage 2 batch 2's here in the next week or so and expect the same type of numbers from them. I attached a couple pics of these turbos so you guys can see the billet wheel and garrett profile turbine.

Sweet! At first glance look very similar to the RBs. Can you overlay with an RB on a stock motor from the same dyno running similar tuning?

Unless there has been a ninja edit I missed (a la Mike Benvo) - Tony clearly stated that these were made from ASR hot-side cores. Unless I am reading his reply wrong? Click here to enlarge

Disgraceful is using your 1 guest vendor post to muddy up Dzenno's thread.

A bit disappointed Rob - as I thought you had a bit more class than that - at least from what I've read from you over the years.

So I am confused, how would a set of VTT stage 2 betas perform? Better or worse than these? The same?

    553WHP/631WTQ - PUMP GAS (94 Octane) + METH
    RB Turbos

Realize this is a ported head car which (and now it is not), but still a pump/meth record/stock frame record from last year.

Also, this turbine is not what will be in the Stage 2 beta hybrids... not even close. Unless VTT does all of the work that ASR has to do to shoe horn a larger turbine into that housing (which is substantial and very costly). To give VTT ultimate cred for the hardware in this situation is nothing short of disgraceful.
