Red face N54 Value Sweetspot - Is it 535i

I looked around in the tristate area for 135i, 335i for weeks and gave up due to the overly bombarded "Sandy" and already juiced car market...... values seem out of kilter with the prices people are asking... then I started looking today at 535i's and in NY one can get a nice low mileage 2008-2010 535i (clean, no mods) for less then the same 135i/335i in many cases....

Outside of an M3 (modded and hot) which I couldnt buy due to my foreigner/insurance status - my argument is in terms of value for power for $$$$, ability to mod for whp/torque and quality/size -

Is the 535i the new value for power deal in the N54 market

Example on auto trader (manuals same level) = http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...gIndex=5&Log=0

Most people who want an N54 choose the 3 or 1 because it is lighter.

There is way more aftermarket support for the 3 and 1, I wouldn't get a 535 unless you need the extra space.

I agree with all of the above but I have seen 135is at prices on avg > 535i... so for 400 lbs or so add RBTurbos, Cobb Tune, DP, FMIC, Water/Meth etc plus the added bonus that virtually no-one has bought a 5 series 535 for a tuned thrashing 1/4 mile beast.. there may be a trade or 2 in there

    OR am I really wrong

The 535 is a great value but it doesn't get the same modding love due to the more limited market.

On the bright side with the 535i due to less modding as it tends to be older buyers you're likely to get a car that was not thrashed or abused.

For thrashin purposes I wanted a 135i with avg miles which I could swap in Rb Turbos etc but there are so few for sale up here (not drowned by Sandy) that it makes it better value to look elsewhere.... add in the fact that I like 5 series size cars cause I am solid and large in my upper body frame and a highly modded 535 may be a better option...

but I hear you as to mods and support ......

then again maybe I should just wait and see what everyone does to the 550i twin turbos etc - power for $$$ for comfort is an unusual requirement but one I look for

I see Terry at BMS is doing some great stuff with the 550i... add in meth and some other mods and maybe 600 whp is capable

The N63 only has mild upgrades available right now. That motor won't realize its potential until you can start swapping S63 manifolds and turbos to it. Then... it may be a hell of a tuning bargain.

TY... I have a year or so to wait as I start to mod my 540i with spray and water/meth... but the work done on the 135/335 segment has been so good post launch (N54) that I suspect there will be other mods on current models that may be worth looking at...

either that or we all wait for the M4 or M2

Seems you are a bit all over the place. It just depends what you really want.

If it's to tune an N54 or N63 based BMW will be superior to your 540i M62.

Nothing wrong with a 535i we have all the mods available that the 1s and 3s have we just have to pay more because they are not modded as often so mods for the 1s and 5s are considerably cheaper generally speaking. I love my 5 not as fast as a pure 1 or 3 because of weight but I love the space.

With the 535 and the right options you get a MUCH nicer interior, a backseat you can use and longer wheelbase ( better stability at higher speeds) . Aftermarket support is not great but it is still there, you can go FBO + rb turbos and go over 500whp. If Shiv or Tony don't confirm fitment for their larger turbo set-ups then there is always a custom shop you can use to get a bigger turbo, the important part though, tuning has been figured out for the most part on this engine and that will not change no matter what chassis the n54 is in.

I cross shopped them a year and a half ago before I bought my 335. I'm enjoying the handling enough on the 335 that I have no regrets. And now having driven a 550GT I like the TT V8 enough that if I bought a 5 series I would want that motor over the N5X, even though the aftermarket support isn't there yet. My friend's 550GT ran just as fast in the 1/4 mile bone stock as I did with a Cobb and E85. A lot more potential there, it would seem. With almost 50% more displacement it only makes sense.

Agreed.... i'd get the TTV8. The aftermarket will come for that car soon enough. If your not keeping for a while though, you could get immediate mods by going with the n54

IMO the 550i will be the ultimate bargain for a daily driver.

Best way to learn is to ask questions...... especially when one has a missus who will drop $$$ on a diamond and then freak about buying a $70k car... her argument is it is worth 20% less as soon as you drive it out of the showroom (she has a point)... I tell her one cannot thrash the living bejesus out of a diamond though

I keep the M62 cause I fall in love with things... but I use it in NY city where everything gets trashed... people just open taxi doors into you... or drop packages on your hood when parked, or ram you at the traffic lights etc....

After I do this little 540i mod I want a very fast "sleeper" car for Long Island that isn't like an asshat Maserati or Mercedes tank, all of which are more common here then a Ford.... a car that I can keep away from the sheety roads and taxis in the city... and one which can thrash the idiots on my street who own Mustangs and aforementioned cars

I love my 535i. I didn't buy it to drag race. I bought it so I can go buy milk for my daughter with 450whp and surprise the crap out of people.

I like that I can have 4 people in it, comfortably and still hang with sports coupes.

Tell the missus if the Russians ever dumped their diamonds on the market her rock would be worth as much... as a rock.

The M62 is great but it costs a bit to get power out of.
