because what space is used, is used efficiently

even bimmerpost uses the ENTIRE width of my screen

OCAU does, performanceforums does, n54tech does.. i can't find one popular forum that uses a blog style layout. this isn't good progress.

this isn't a blog, i'm not a fan of blogs layout, but they're written and read more like a news paper, large sets of paragraphs with little break in between.. what space IS used, is used EFFICIENTLY.

if you like the colour scheme.. well it's your forum, do whatever pleases you... but not everyone likes one or the other.. and regardless, everyone was used to teh darker theme, and to me darker separated it from bimmerpost... contrasts it.

darker seems more mature, more powerful.. lighter makes it seem.. techy and frivolous?

Once again I don't get why entire width of screen is good in your mind? This layout does go entire width on ipad's and iphone's now so no wasted space on low res.

Even if you go higher res and let's say I set it to go entire width there is still wasted space it is just now wasted space inside the margins versus outside. So what is the difference? Res will keep going up.

This is a blog and a forum. I can set different widths for each btw.

i can read entire posts without having to scroll

what percentage of use of this forum shows up as mobile, and what shows up as computer, to warrant the disregard of usability on full-sized high-res devices?

can't you set something in the forum software to go 'oh hey you're on this device/resolution (or whatever)' and arrange the layout accordingly? too difficult?

    i have 2 monitors at the moment.. 1 1600*900, the other 1920*1080

all the above forums i mentioned scale to my monitor size, teh gap either side stays identical, it doesn't become wider

so everyone else can do it...?

when you fit to width, there's no wasted space 'in the margin'.. the text wraps fully...? same with images, everything.

flat and wide with some POTENTIAL wasted space > skinny and tall (needing scrolling) and guaranteed wasted space.

plus, all the areas i circled can be realigned for the most part to make everything more space-efficient as is.

I mean yes of course I can fit to width. I just really like the way this style looks and closing the sidebar doesn't give you enough width?

The text doesn't look better to you this way? It does to me.

    The entire forum looks cleaner.

You're going to have to scroll no matter what.

I wish I could just let you guys set your own widths then. Let me see if I can do that.

(dont quote me here) but i think its only like that because the sidebar is expanded as a popup type thing.

Yes it's not correctly taking the sidebar border into account.

closing the sidebar improves it, but it still has the 3" gap both sides (i just measured) on a small (17") screen

and the sidebar is useful, so either way it's a total compromise?

When I look at sites that go full width they just look dated to me. Like n54tech was mentioned and it's just basic VB. It looks like everything else.

You don't feel at all this is more modern and cleaner?

What would be ideal in your opinion?

We'll we're 24/7 so hard to shut down. Might as well test when I can get feedback from you guys.

I can change bimmerboost back until it's figured out and just leave this style up on GermanBoost. Should make everyone happy.

for me the biggest deal is the use of space, completely disregarding my complaints of the empty margins and theme colour.. just.. kerning type stuff.. (justification? alignment? i don't know what you'd call it when it's not font related)

For me that's the best part it's so much easier to read and easier on the eyes. The space on the side doesn't matter it reads cleaner.

    woah $#@! it just reverted

both styles have pros and cons

the 'round' look and new modern fonts of the new theme

    well it looks modern right?

but.. well have a look at the way it is now.. the side bar LOOKS like it has it's own spot on the page, everything is nice and.. well placed. nothing FEELS like it shouldn't be there.

when it's all smooth and borderless/rounded borders, you lose definition, and you have to be even more careful with how it's all placed

check the top of the 'old' style.. everything is well aligned, there's no random image bars that shouldn't be there.. the logo fills the top as a background, then links are on the left, notifications etc. on the right, all in their own place

yeah N54tech doesn't make a good example as it's very standard

what about e90post then.. it's not cutting edge, but it's modern all the same. (they put way too much more effort into the mobile apps)

i probably came off as too negative, after comparing the two the new one does have merit's, but it was very poorly .. laid out?

I like the width of this one (old one that is on now) but rather the fonts and buttons of the new one. Doesn't need to full width by any means just a little more than you had it set to.

    Again person preference of course.

The new one just has bugs. The logo isn't designed for it.

Regarding notifications, that whole design is getting an update.

I'm using the new style right now and I mean it took me getting used to as well but to me it's more modern.

You weren't too negative it's fine tell me what you think.

ook, new version, sidebar closed i have 3" gap either side

old version is 1.75" either side with a border (can be used with a nice background or some clean ads still?)

i don't really see how it's easy to read - having a look at the bits i circled it's just got massive gaps you can squish down by a handfull of pixels and it would look amazingly better?
