GIAC Stage 2 Race File Igntion Advance

Does anyone know what I should be shooting for timing-wise while dialing in my AM HFS system? I think it's 10 degrees, after it recovers post-shift. I've also noticed that is dives to 5-8 in higher gears when you give it some shoe. If I roll into the throttle more gently it will stay between 10 and 14. Do I need to adjust for more methanol sooner, or change to an IDC-trigger and set the threshold lower? Thanks very much for any assistance.

I haven't seen GIAC talk in a LONG time so this is interesting.

What psi do you currently have it triggered at? I would honestly email GIAC for their recommendation.

It's currently triggered by manifold pressure and comes on at the first sign of boost in second gear. In the higher gears, it's more like 3-5 psi, and I think it's because there's not enough injector duty cycle in the higher gears, despite the amount of boost. I'm going to experiment this weekend.

i did ask GIAC what the target advance should be, and the gentleman I spoke with "couldn't remember." I've run race gas with this file many times, so I know I'm in the ball park. Still, this was the first time GIAC was less than super helpful.

It feels like GIAC has moved on from the n54. Bummer, because they had a sweet solution with the handheld map switcher way before Cobb came out. Search mr5 videos on YouTube and/or e90

Same here, GIAC is paying more attention to VAG right now. Read that however you like.

It's a shame. I really liked their concept of changing flash files on the fly while the engine was running. Hopefully the bb solution figures out the same logic.

Before I had my TL, I had a VW CC and used the same switcher on both cars. I bet someone in the VAG world would buy it. They still retail for $150 from GIAC.

Instead of a PM through the 'post, I'm going to call them Monday. They've always been great in the past. That, the switcher, and the smoothness is why I've stayed with them despite the other offerings that have come out in the past couple of years.

giacs idea of methanol safety was to run 3 degrees more advance by default and if meth cuts out the ecu will naturally cut timing 3 degrees to hit pump gas curves.

they were also proponents of riding the knock sensor.

I switched from an MPS triggered setup to IDC and lowered the threshold until timing stayed about 9 degrees, even post-shift. After a few pulls, timing advance was even higher, with traction hard to come by. I reset adaptations and will do some more pulls tomorrow, with hopefully even better results.

I'm running an Aquamist HFS-2 with two 1.0mm jets in the BMS elbow, with a 50/50 mix of VP M1 and distilled water. So far so good Click here to enlarge

Are there old threads I could read? I was still rocking a Volvo wagon with a hybrid turbo in 2008.

Search for "mr. 5" on E90, he had a well documented journey with GIAC race file.

Yea mr5 was or is a mod on e90post. I haven't seen him active in a few years though. I think he has an e36 now...

he had a deal with ecs and GIAC. Sponsorship of some sorts. Shame he moved on from this platform. He was knowledgable and a straight shooter. Didn't put up with Jason's bull $#@!

I found some good stuff from Mr. 5...I felt like a stalker Click here to enlarge

I finally got my setup dialed in yesterday with some logging and adjustments to the gain on the Aquamist controller. No timing pulls at all!

13.0 at 116 mph was the best I could muster without wheel spin. I've been searching for some drag radials for sale in the classifieds, but I haven't seen anything pop up yet. I also need to suck it up and get an LSD...maybe next year.

It's amazing how much faster a tuned N54 is compared to G8s, 370Zs, and a lot of other street cars. Even when cars left before me I was able to catch them and pass them before the end of the quarter. I'm sure if I had another tune with more power it would be even more impressive.

The n54 is a very capable motor and when modded in a 135 or 335 a very quick car. I am still not bored of mine yet. Get a lsd, it makes a world of difference.
