    Why beryllium valve seats? Because race car - Honda B-Series head with titanium valves and beryllium seats

    I just want beryllium in my engine to say I have beryllium something in my engine. But I figured I'd share something I learned about it. Here's some pics of a ridiculously badass Honda B-Series head with titanium valves and beryllium seats. This is for an all motor setup that will run straight methanol like a boss:

    So what's the point? Titanium and beryllium have different melting points and apparently the beryllium protects the titanium valves from heat. Either way, stuff looks absurdly awesome doesn't it?

    we use beryllium in a bunch of race heads.
    heck if you *want* it, we can do it on your heads (or any heads for that matter)

    beryllium is really tough stuff. its very durable, but on the other hand- difficult to work with.
    another thing i see it used for at the machine shop, is to machine the lifter bores out on an american V8, then press in beryllium inserts to keep the lifters square to the camshaft.

    Are they just beryllium or beryllium copper? When copper is alloyed with beryllium it makes a hard seat that conducts heat really well.

    Wouldnt ceramic coating the valves protect the titanium better? Of course it wouldnt look as cool

    Protecting, as in the titanium is "beat up" as a stainless seat would do. The beryllium has a little Cush or bounce to it and doesn't beat up the Ti as bad

    Exactly. It also has great properties like a bronze bushing. A little oil on it and it is very tough to abuse

    Man, I miss my k20z1. It was incredible on 12psi via peak boost turbo kit. Too bad honda never gave enthusiasts a rear-wheel coupe or sedan featuring this plus the honda 6mt

    Why beryllium? High rpm capabilities. Titanium is very strong but it isnt durable when being rubbed against another metal that is hard so beryllium copper works well. It is also a favorite because a hot valve only has two methods of dissipating heat, through the seat and the guide both of which are likely beryllium. However for this particular motor I wouldn't think heat is a concern if its on meth. Lots of badass honda heads out there.

    and on the cost of beryllium seats to go with it.. what about that? many multiple thousands i assume?

    To do beryllium on a 6 cylinder BMW engine, its an additional 1800 to install, that doesn't include any other head work.... Just taking out the old seats, machining, cutting new seats and valve job

    wow thats some serious engine work. The only engine that i ever saw that metal was on the older F1 engines before they were banned.
    ground control coilovers/wavetrac lsd/ full m3 suspension/delrin bushings/ megan racing toe and camber arms/bmw oem performance carbon fiber front lip and rear deck spoiler/m3 strut brace/ecs SS brakelines/CPE dci's, charge pipe, catless dp, fmic/bms OCC/tuningtechfs custom tune/defiv diff lockdownkit,rbpcv valve.

    $1800 just does not seem worth it, you see many high HP bmw's 700-900whp and they don't have any issues not using this. BUt yes def looks cool

    Is it overkill? Sure. But serious high power car modding isn't about logical/economical decisions to begin with.
