    Hybrid Turbo on 335ix?

I'm new here, hoping this is the right place to ask (otherwise I'll just move it) has anyone run hybrid turbos on an AWD car? I'm considering my next purchase and am interested in getting a 335ix (because of where I live I need the AWD), and getting 650-700 BHP in it, so has this been done before? If it has could you point me to the build thread please? And is there a problem with this much power going through a transfer case or something like that? Thank you in advance! (You can just tell me if I should move this to model specific discussion but I thought I'd be more likely to get information here!)

Yes its been done. 700bhp is not realistic. There are issues with a plastic gear in the xfer case.

The plastic gear is the first I have heard. Does the TC really have load-bearing plastic gears? I saw a disassembly of the 335xi transfer case, and never saw a plastic gear. The worry, I believe, was over a metal worm gear which would wear down more heavily under excess load.

Guys i have an xi, planning Rb upgrade next month. Most I think I will get is 550whp max. My thoughts after all investigation is that its the end for this FBO cars. Later you will be forced to do engine and try upgrades.

Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen an xi with 550 whp. Even the single turbo 335xi that shiv/FFTEC collaborated on was 519 at the wheels. Maybe there are new numbers on that now. 450 at the wheels would be what I'm aiming for. I'm viewing 500 as "amazing" if I ever get there. I'm only at 400 right now Click here to enlarge

    Really? Where?

last 3x i've seen the xfer case discussed it came up as 'stout' and 'not a short term worry'??

But the rwd record on hybrid's is 555whp... With a modified head.... Not realistic at all on an xi with stock head lol

Ya the transfer case issue is not true as stated. That was regurgitated inf prior to tear down. There is a single turbo xi out there so if you take care of your car and don't beat it, you should be fine with fbo and tbs.

But that single turbo car is going to be laggy, have a linear power band, and a torque plateau once it spools up. Compare that to hybrid stock frame turbos that spool up lightening fast and have a fat, meaty power band, and its easy to see that they will actually cause more stress on the drive line components. Thats not to say it cannot be done, there is a few xi models with upgraded turbos running around. @jpsimon has vargas stage II's (first batch), and is making some meaty power. I think you will most likely be ok as long as you are not expecting to launch at 5k with 10psi at the drag strip every other weekend.

The plastic gear is the transfer case actuator assembly.
It turns the clutches on/off inside the case.

the case itself and components "seem" strong enough, but time will tell.

Btw, I can fix those gears without buying the whole motor Click here to enlarge

I was also considering doing a full turbo upgrade such as Vargas Stage 3 VVT VTR, but would the transfer case still be the limiting factor? And does anyone really know at which point it would go?

Still not sure where the limit is, but hoping I don't find it with mine. It would be great if you do find a workable solution for a beefed up TC option.

Alex - please get an xi so that I have options available to upgrade my tranny and driveline components since I will be running a Vargas stage 3 turbo kit as well. Looking forward to options to handle high horsepower with awd.

So..... it works, but what can I expect running 91 octane and full replacement turbos? (I'd do the heads too if I was going full twin turbo replacement)
