E60 M5 with tune and no speed limiter goes over 205 miles per hour hitting on autobahn close to indicated 340 km/h or 211 mph

This is an interesting albeit somewhat crazy video of an E60 M5 owner going completely balls out with his car on what appears to be the autobahn. The car has a tune which means it no longer has a speed limiter and the car can hit whatever speed it can reach. The owner is filming this with a camera in his hand, while on a public road, and switching through lanes at over 200 miles per hour. There is a better and safer way to do this but he does capture his speedometer.

Now factory BMW speedometers tend to read a bit fast so the accuracy here is unknown but it is damn fast. Additionally, he does max out the speedo passing the indicated 330 km/h which is 205 miles per hour. He claims to hit 340 km/h which is 211 miles per hour although there is no verification of this and the display is not set to a digital readout. For this to be accurate he would need a GPS setup.

Regardless, it's damn fast and a bit nuts.

I would think that anyone could come to that conclusion just by the dash/gauges alone.

I used to max mine (limiter wise) quite often. Topped out at 272 on the HUD and it felt like hitting a wall. There was plenty more to go.

Party trick was to take both hands of the wheel and touch the headliner for a few seconds Click here to enlarge

It's interesting to me how I recall SMG being much faster/violent than this. I definitely thought that DCT in the M3 was faster than the previous gen M3 w/ SMG - but looking at this video, it's not even comparable... DCT blows the shift speed of SMG out of the water. Is the SMG "detuned" on the M5? It doesn't seem like I remember it.

Regardless, that's an incredible machine - 200+ MPH in a 4 door sled... Insane. Click here to enlarge

The DCT does crush it for shift speed. That said, I prefer how the SMG functioned and its response time to an input better. I always nailed redline shifts with the SMG with the DCT I hit the limiter more times than I could count.

Yeah, that's a great point... One of the things that drives me absolutely nuts in regard to DCT is the small delay between the paddle pull and the actual shift. For people that are trying to understand what we are saying - say the redline is 8400 - you see the tach at 8300 and pull the paddle to shift into 2nd. By the time the gearbox "reacts" - the revs have already increased and you are likely bumping the limiter which ruins the next shift (hard to explain, but it pauses for a small amount of time if you hit redline and then shift). SMG was MUCH more accurate in this regard - you pull the paddle, and the thing shifted without any rise in RPM.

I wonder why they haven't been able to resolve this with software to be honest, it is kinda crappy behavior the more I think about it.

    Exactly right on.

I have no clue but it takes away from the feel of the car and it's something I'm amazed people who rave about the DCT don't mention.

Might be higher shifts are a little slower, my 1-2-3-4 are crazy fast and hard. haven't done much full throttle high rpm 5-6-7 shifts.
What are the MDCT shift times? I was reading SMGIII is 65ms.

S85 cars have some of the best top-end ever. Truly unbelievable. All these years later, still one of the fastest four-door cars in the world.

I know! That's what's holding me back from wanting an E60 M5...I see the FI options for the M3 and it seems like a no-brainer. Now, if someone could give me 1000 hp, even at the crank, in that car, I'd be in heaven, permanently.
