Next generation 2015-2016 BMW 5-Series already spotted testing, spyphotos - F10 replacement will focus on lightweight materials

Doesn't it feel like the F10 5-Series just got here? BMW seems to be in a hurry to move past it perhaps because the F10 has not exactly been gloriously received. Complaints about the steering feel as well as the incredible heft (it's freaking fat) along with very reserved styling gives the F10 a bit of a bland feel. Not BMW's best 5-Series ever but BMW seems set to make the next one much better and that is great news for everyone.

Here is the next gen 5-Series testing in wagon form (no internal chassis code revealed yet) and reports state BMW intends to focus on weight savings. Finally, someone at BMW wakes up. The next gen 5-Series will heavily utilize lightweight materials including CFRP. Efficiency is at a premium and a great way to make a car more efficient is to make it lighter. Now this if true is real Efficient Dynamics not just marketing.

Expect a three cylinder motor to make its way into the 5-Series as well just likely not for the US market. Spyphotos/Pictures below.

I know it is impossible to tell...but I already like what I see. Something like the E60, lots of taught, slightly curved lines, lots of energy in the flow of the body. Lots more than the beached-whale F10. I'm pretty excited for it.

I think the F10 5 series looks great. It is heavy though but I don't think the steering is that bad and the handling is pretty good considering its size. Not as good as my 1M but I was surprised the other day when I drove and even made the comment to my wife.

As far as the next generation.....it may be lighter due to materials but I guarantee it will grow in physical size which still sucks.

On a sidenote....I ve already been telling my wife she needs to trade her 535 in for the M4 or M2 when they come out. They 5 is too big for her...she can't drive...Click here to enlarge

The R&D timeline seems about right for the next 5 series. I took a tour of the Mercedes R&D center down here in SoCal and there working on models/trims/powertrain 10 years into the future. I do hope the next generation has some weight shaved off.
