    2008 335 clutch job

So I called the "reputable shop" in the area after hours and left a message asking how much to do the clutch. They called back, left a message, and I nearly needed a cardiology consult. Not even sure if its an OEM clutch. But they said "clutch, flywheel, bolts, pilot bearing, basically $3000!!! They also mentioned, "looked it up, you have the sport suspension." No idea what that means, but that quote seems WAY high. Need your help guys. I live in Chicago. Any suggestions are appreciated. Also, must you do the flywheel automatically? I have a juice box and I'm thinking a stock clutch would be a dumb move at this point. Thanks everyone...

i think cuz I have SUCKER written on my forehead. With the little I do know about this, I thought exactly the same thing. I have no reason why I would need it changed. I've had good luck with ACT in the past. Any thoughts on what should be a fair deal on this kind of job?

I don't know the prices on a clutch job in your area but guys here know what it should generally go for. @Itsbrokeagain (he's in Vegas damn it)

Um, someone will respond with what they paid then you can print it out if you need to. Maybe go to a different shop though.

You will either need a new flywheel or resurface your old one. I recommend a new one, the stock units dual mass springs can fail with age, but like I said you can just get it resurfaced.

Book time for a clutch job is 8 hours so ~$125/hr is about $1K in labor.

I did it with 2 friends in 3 1/2 hours so 8 hours of manpower is about right. $3K is too much, maybe $2K would be about right parts and labor.

If they are replacing all the parts with new oem, then yes I can see close to 3k.

    Labor: 800-1000
    New flywheel: 800
New clutch: 4-600 (dealer ripoff price)
    All new bolts:20-30
    New TO bearing: 70-80

Obviously I wouldnt pay anything close to this. Labor is unchanged, but a new flywheel can be had for about 6 bills, and an ACT clutch is about 4-500 bucks. So id say about 21-2200ish for just about everything.

You guys need to understand that shops make most of their $ on labor. I can understand not wanting to be overcharged but charging someone only 3-4hrs for that kinda job leaves no room for profit. I mean, lights and the AC dont turn themselves on you know.

Average cost to run a lift and pay bills is about $400/hr. Which is why we are always trying to get work done and out. Cuse a dead lift means no income.

what kinda shop has rent THAT high, and costs in general THAT high

heck, if a lift cost that much to run+ maintain, you may as well just throw them out because you buy them for $#@! all...

Absolutely, everyone deserves to put bread on their table. However, undesirable stereotypes linked to various professions, unfortunately, just don't manifest out of thin air. Just because we "drive BMWs" doesn't mean we deserve to pad the shops profit margins just for the heck of it...

Google search and usually ive seen suppliers sell it for less.

And 400/hr isnt unreasonable to maintain. When you have 6 employees(all legit on the books), 3 bays, and only open 5 days a week you will realize it takes a lot of work to keep bills paid and pay your taxes at the end of the year (which due to NYs laws we had to pay close to 100k) this year, up from last year)

oh, you have stuff like that too? Click here to enlarge

we just had a Radical SR9 American Lemans team get settled into the back of the shop.
Here's to them making a mess in carbon fiber dust and stoopid expensive parts Click here to enlarge
We have a GT2, GT3rs and a few other 911 variants here.... but primarily we screw with BMW's.

Now, if only all this expensive stuff would turn into "money-in-the-pockets", instead of "tied-up-money"
