Like I said before Weisco will make custom sized pistons for not much more than off the shelf pistons. Only question is will eagle or Manley make custom rods? I bet they will.

For a reasonable price? competition drives price more of a factor than availability these days.

    It's flat rate hours.
it doesn't matter if "you've done it before", you still get paid the same amount.

Then again this is speculation, since I haven't looked up the actual hours it calls for, it was just a guess from all the engines I've done
ahh yeah, so like i said, 'dealership hours'

if i take it to a workshop and they do it in half that... and i know it... i wouldn't be happy being charged 24hrs for it.

unless you charge in the same manner?

i don't know of any local indy performance shop that would charge TIS hours for any work, inc engine removal unless they went over. may just be the different car culture over here though.

Buddy, that's how every single shop works. Flat rate. They just don't make up numbers.

We have a swapped IS300 local here too!

Regarding the amount, I would think most shops would "work" a little on the labor side with the person if they were doing a full motor build / turbo swap etc. I would hope at least. Especially for the publicity they could receive with the internet.

But im sure there is people that will pay full price.

fair enough, not saying it's bad for you to be doing that, it's fair enough, you can

but it's not how any shop over here does it, they'd lose business because everyone knows how long it actually takes.

Everything i learn about shops in the states vs Australia, mechcanics over there tend to charge WAY more for everything... $80/hr here is pretty normal for the top shops.

what do you mean by 'they don't make up numbers'

'24 hours' is a made up number

here, if it takes them 6 labour hours to remove the engine (or however long), they'll charge for 6 labour hours... and if it takes 8 to put it back in (or again, however long), that's what they charge.

or some will charge their own internal flat rate, which is usually around the $1000 mark for the shop's i've spoken to. not 24 hours by any means.

$80/hr is actually fairly cheap here and yup the shops will charge you the book labor here unless you know them. I get actual labor time usually but I've been using te same places for almost 5 years.

I'm not going to derail this thread on how professional shops charge for repairs, if you want we can discuss that in another thread.

it varies shop to shop here

we do have some REALLY high end indy's that charge $110-$120, but they tend to work on exotics, lambo/ferrari more often, so they can... not that they're any BETTER than other mechanics

some charge flat rate for some jobs like engine RnR, others charge hourly up to a cap... so sorta flat rate and under... i haven't seen $2-2.5k for that alone though.

don't mean to step on your toes, was just wondering how it works for you, and saying how it usually goes over here

we have seriously different markets... car enthusiasts can be really tough on workshops, especially on how much they charge.

i'm pretty happy with $90hr, but that's about as high as i'm willing to go for the most part

all my suspension and alignment was done for $80/hr iirc at what's considered one of the best motorsport suspension shops in the city.

Can you give us the hours you would quote for an RnR? I want to hear someone's numbers for comparison. Thanks.

    scuseme?

talking about machine shop/workshop rates in a thread that's basically about machine shop work is off topic? out of them all, your post is the most off-topic...

sorry if anyone agrees, and does find it annoying though

the conversation appeared to have ended on that tangent, anyway.

Labor times to pull an N54 out of a vanilla 335, and reinstall it: (long block basically)
    KSD: 32.5
    shop key/all data: 27.8
so an average of 30 hours.

    meh, I was close.
I'll talk to my machinist when I go there for machine work charges.

I guess you don't realize the amount of work to pull an engine, strip it of all components, assemble it onto another engine, and reinstall it, fluids, make it run, drive it, etc.etc. It's no easy task! I remember being at the dealership, and watching guys work on engine r&r'/for 3-5 DAYS- as in 10+ hours a day.
