Yea, then the machine shop labor and parts. The local machine shop has one of the only digital balancer's in the area, +/- .04 grams is the standard balance from them!

It's going to be tough to get a price because there are only a handful of built N54s.

Plan on $12k-15k for cost of pistons/rod, drop engine, disassembly, machine work, assembly of new rods/pistons, putting engine back in.

I guess I'd find that to be a little high where I live. Also depending on if the customer went full removal with bore/hone ect or if they went with drop ins. I'd say one could have drop-ins done here with new pistons, rods, bearings and crank balanced/polished for around $4k. I'd say to completely remove the motor and bore/hone etc I could get it done for prob $6k. Then if we're talking re-sleeving add prob another $1200

Add the $5k for the rods and pistons and you're at $11k.

What would you charge to drop the engine and put it back in? Just curious how many hours you would consider it.

My 17k 620/740 M3 for sale is looking better and better now, isn't it lolol

Btw, I'm pooped, I got done with everything today, but the extra credit of pulling the N54 apart isnt gonna happen.....the 2jz is on the engine stand, I don't want to take it off right now, the N54 is outside on a pallet, its hot, I'm tired and a cold beer wandered into my life...... So I'll have to mess with the comparison tomorrow. I did look at the block and heads of the 2jz and its funny the similarity of both engines.

that shouldn't be accurate at all

say $1k for drop and reinstall

$500 for teardown (high estimate)... $2k for pistons, $2k for rods... $2k for work (high estimate again)

    Thats unrealistic.
1000 to remove an install? That's 10 hours of labor at my shop, and there is no way I'll do that job for 10 hrs. Since I'm not at the shop, I don't have KSD/shop key/all data in front of me.....but I'm betting an N54 R&R is about 24 hours....

    ?!

yeah i'd assume 24 hours 'bmw time'

but 24 hours for a normal shop who has done it before?

1.5 labour days to remove an engine? really?

$5k rods and pistons? That sounds rediculous. I just bought the best pistons and rods money can buy for $1200. Granted that was only for 4 and they're off the shelf now but $5k sounds way too high.

I paid for 30 hours labor for my motor swap.

Just checked some papers and it's more like $4000. But that also includes extra coatings and options.

VAC website - piston kit starts at $1050 plus $360 for coatings, $325 for anodized rings, $120 for heavy duty piston pin, rods are $280ea. Total - $3535.

no, see you don't understand. 24 hours is remove and install.
    It's flat rate hours.
it doesn't matter if "you've done it before", you still get paid the same amount.

Then again this is speculation, since I haven't looked up the actual hours it calls for, it was just a guess from all the engines I've done

Seems like VAC needs to continue lowering their prices. That is still ridiculous for a set of pistons and $280/rod isn't exactly even with other platforms across the board either. Seems like it would be cheaper to start with small forgings and machine the rods out. I don't know about the cost of the forgings, but the machine time on a cnc mill wouldn't be long.
