650 horsepower BMW "M8" supercar back on the table for 2016 to honor BMW's 100 year anniverssary? Maybe? Maybe not?

Well the BMW supercar rumor is swirling around again this time being perpetuated by Car and Driver who apparently is bored. People love this topic though so it will be addressed but it is kind of lame to see Car and Driver report an M8 supercar is coming for 2016 without any official confirmation. They even state in their own report it might not show up at all, "BMW boss Norbert Reithofer is not a fan of this car, but the head of BMW M GmbH, Friedrich Nitschke, is. The top boss could cancel the project at the last minute."

Well that's some strong automotive journalism there Car and Driver. So the head of M wants a supercar based on the i8 and the head of BMW does not think it fits the direction of the company (electrics, hybrids, hippie green marketing crap) showing just how far off course the company is now from building drivers cars.

If BMW needs to be talked into building a successor to the M1 there is no hope. If the head of M can't even get a successor built to the very first production M car (and that's with BMW's 100 year anniversary is coming up in 2016) yet a $150+k hybrid gets the green light there is something seriously wrong at BMW these days.

If it does come, expect it to have a modified 4.4 liter S63 V8 motor with an output of 650 horsepower and a hefty price tag. That's absolutely fine with us but somebody please find out what happened to BMW's balls. Build the damn thing and show a little backbone, what the hell is wrong you BMW?

With everything that's been happening with BMW in the new, I really doubt they'll build this.

    It's disappointing.

That's just a concept the real thing will be way different providing it comes. It has to come IMO for BMW to repair its image.

I can't believe there is even a discussion about this. As long as BMW is happy to stick lightly modified versions of its normal engines into M cars, they already have the S63tü, 7 speed M-DCT, and the carbon fiber chassis from the i8. Just throw them together and call it a day. Cynicism aside, I would love to see this done properly with a new motor but honestly its competition will be the R8 and Mercedes SLS so a 600-650hp version of the S63 in a light weight carbon fiber chassis is more than enough.
