Unfair comparison? Drag race and road course comparison between Porsche 997.2 turbo S, Audi R8 V10 Plus, and a 750 horsepower tuned GT-R

It's great to see the 911 Turbo versus the R8 and Nissan GTR as they are all four wheel drive performance cars and now all also share having a dual clutch transmission available with the R8 getting its minor refresh. This is something enthusiasts want to see except that it isn't all that fair taking two stock cars, the 911 Turbo and the Audi R8, and putting them up against a 750 horsepower tuned GT-R. What fun is it if we already know the outcome and the other two cars have no fair chance?

The 750 horsepower tuned GT-R ends up dominating all the tests, what a surprise. It's the fastest in a straight line and the fastest around the roadcourse. Yawn. The meaningful comparison though is between the R8 and the 911 Turbo S.

Between the two, the Turbo S is the faster car in a straightline. The updates to the R8 V10 make it quicker and faster although not by much as Edmunds recently showed with test of it. Considering a stock 997.2 Turbo S recently went 10.6@129.8 in the 1/4 mile it is no surprise to see it the beat down the R8 in the drag race. Skip ahead to the 16:00 minute mark to see the drag race.

The R8 wins around the track though with a 1:16.2 versus the 1:16.9 for the Porsche 911 Turbo. Subjectively, the R8 is car picked overall despite being the slowest in a straight line. Sometimes its now how much power you deliver but how you deliver it. The R8 seems to simply be the most enjoyable to drive.

If you consider this as a "what can I get for the xx-yy dollar range" it's not so bad, and he stated that was really their intent with this video. Seems like the GT-R ended up being the better package for the money. Fasted in the 1/4 and around the track, and the suspension mods made the car more livable on the road. All of these Harris videos are subjective for the most part anyway. They didn't even show the 1/4 mile times in the video.

I'll be intersted to see the 991 turbo/turbo s in this sort of comparison. 4WS, new chassis, new motor, new AWD system... Should be a much different outcome.

In the end you'll still be driving a GT-R, and not a V-10 R8. Way different class of car IMO, same thing goes for the 911 Turbo S. I'd rather be seen in any of those 2 cars than a GT-R. Just like the article states, it's not all about power.

Took the words right out my mouth !

You know, even though the R8 is the slowest, it still stirs a bit of excitement inside me. I know many wouldn't agree but, I find it's aesthetics more pleasing than the Gallardo and would choose it over it given the opportunity. I'd probably have a tough time choosing between the R8 and the P-car ( especially after seeing ADV.1's pic of the 991 ).

If you are doing what you can get for X money though then just get a used turbo and throw a tune on it. Or get a used Z06 and then spend the difference. It opens up a huge can of worms.

3 very capable AWD setups and the GTR's victory over the 911 was small in the drag race portion when you consider the claimed HP and mods. The stock 911 puts on one heck of a show plus its stock with a warranty etc... Versus the modded GTR has no warranty at all. Of course for many buying in that range that may not be a concern. I'd buy the R8 and get a Stasis package on it, warranty-power-braking-handling = Winning.

    But opinions will vary
    We stay swingin...

I find all three cars appealing for different reasons. GT-R for all-out brute force, 911 for its all-around capabilities, everyday drivability and prestige, and the Audi for that V-10 and overall high class package.

I'd take the P-car over the R8, but the R8 over the Lambo.

I agree - the comparo goes to $#@! when you bring in a modded car... Used x plus y mods, etc. I consider these Harris videos more of a Top Gear entertainment show than serious review stuff.

I said above that I would pick the 911 over the R8, but an R8 with full Stasis treatment would be awfully tempting.

Same here, the GT3 is going to be the better drivers car out of all of them.

i find chris harris kinda an easier-to-stomach cross between topgear and fifth gear

fifth gear being a bit sterile and tiff being a bit of an annoying wanker (not like the TG presenters who are hilarious lovable annoying wankers hahhaa)
