    E46 Safety

Earlier last week, I was involved in a serious crash and I had to spend 3 days in the Intensive Care Unit with a broken neck, broken ribs and bruised lungs. The dynamics of the crash itself are puzzling and even the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were left scratching their heads. I went off the road in a turn and hit a ditch, which then acted as a launch ramp. I then collided with a steel post which was used as a clothes line, hit the roof of a house before landing on a parked truck. I hit the truck with my trunk, which means I spun in mid air.

I have been extremely lucky and owe my life to the car I was in. The fact that it was a sedan gave it even more rigidity. I was obviously wearing my seat belt.

This is the ditch I hit where I left the road.

First thing I hit. This was used as a clothes line and deviated my trajectory. I also believe it caused my car to start spinning.

I was in the air for the entire length of the house and the truck was parked in the driveway.

The jaws of life were used to remove the doors and get me out of the car. It took 2 hours for rescue workers to get me out safely and avoid further injuries.

Each door is reinforced with a diagonal aluminum bar with a metal hook at the rear edge. Upon severe side impact, the hook locks into a recessed notch that you can see in the picture below. This means the body side holds together as a unit, offering significantly greater strength. You can see here that the body of the car absorbed a lot of energy.

I thank God for still being alive, and I thank him for creating those BMW engineers who designed such a safe car!

Ouch. Don't know what else to say. Glad to hear that you're alright, relatively speaking. It's a good thing the BMW is engineered and built so well. As they say, you can always get another car, but not another life. Get better.

    Cheers.

    Thank you.

Looks like I'm now in the market for a N54 or E46 M3.

    Thank you very much.

The recovery is going great as I am now completely off pain killers and only have a neck brace to wear.

Glad you survived that surreal experience and thank you for sharing. Reminders like those put things in perspective about how trivial material possessions are in comparison to life. Rest up and make the most of your down time.

    Thank you.

I'm fine with the brace except when I'm sleeping. I find it puts too much stress on my lower jaw and hurts my teeth.

Man that's a bad wreck. All I want to say is I'm glad you're here and not seriously injured.

An E46 gave up its life for mine too once. Also was red.

    Thanks.

I've got a lot of good memories of the car except for that last drive of course. It drove like a champ!

Still hard to believe that 2 years ago today, I was going in a coma and breaking my neck.

My neck still hurts by the way.
