    Cat Positioning....

I notice that certain HFC's have the cats in the same place as OEM (a la Fabspeed) and some have them further back in the x-pipe (akra). What, if anything, is affected by cat placement? Are you less likely to throw a code w/ the cats closer to the motor? how is performance affected, sound, etc?

Having them further upstream allows them to heat faster, better for emissions. The X-pipe's still having cats but in slightly different places won't have a big effect.

If you have a cat before the sensors you won't throw a code. If you delete it, you will have to move the sensors or turn them off as you will get a CEL.

Thanks Sticky! So fabspeed's setup would be less likely to throw a code then Akra.

If it has a cat in about the factory location it won't throw a code. If it is deleted, it will.

    I recommend a tune anyway.

I was under the impression if the Cat is pushed up more it will give more kick but less flow.
so if the cats are up close you should create less HP but better low end.
Also if the cats are pushed up more the car is quieter. muffles the sound better
some say the Fabspeed stil throws lights but I don't know I have never used a Fabspeed xpipe before

Never thought cat placement would have an effect on HP. Good info to know.

It can, in the US E46 M3 they put a cat right into the header which robbed HP. Eliminating that cat made a nice difference in power. Basically, where a cat is won't have as much of an impact as removing that cat completely.

How many cell? 200? 300 should be fine but under that and you will throw a code from time to time.
