I knew that Doc Race was making the VTT S3 manifold, but I think it's more impressive that it specifically references Horsepower Freaks' ST N54.... Signs the project is still alive

Wasn't done on the Down low at all. They named it update for a reason, the previous update was posted about 3-4 months ago, that was when I contacted them about making ours and asked them about that TS manifold. They were super friendly and told me about it. This project has been out in the open since they started it.

My apologies...I personally had not seen it. I had heard of Full Race working on the n54 and N55.

No need for apologies at all. I forget who had posted it last time. They are doing some good work. As far as Full Race, I work with Jeremy on some stuff and we have discussed the BMW upgrades here and there. He has never mentioned any real interest in the N54 stuff, but I could easily be wrong.

no. this is old. they should have this car going by now and that they ceramic coated it isn't really "big" news. I even made offer to buy the manifold a while back to utilize with my 6466 build and they wouldn't sell it. Glad it went down that way as I much prefer the manifold proven power has built for me Click here to enlarge

However, the Vishnu-FFTEC ST setup has some major flaws in my opinion. The manifold should have been a twin-scroll manifold in order to separate the exhaust flows on the two O2 sensors, and ideally two wastegates should have been used.
Can't help but to quote myself...Click here to enlarge This is a correct single-turbo manifold for the N54 ! Twin-scroll and dual wastegate, so any tuning solution can be used. If this would sell as a kit (manifold + downpipe) it could be very cost-effective and possibly as good as a twin-turbo setup (for high-power applications; not so for lower-power applications).

The development looks slow if it took months for them to coat the manifold. Click here to enlarge I'm not surprised about the low demand and consecutively low supply for turbo upgrades because the stockers are great for any grocery getter. I bet it takes another couple of months until HPF starts selling this.

Not sure how going twin wastegate will do anything to allow any tuning solution to be used? They are booth boost activated waste gates, which are going to require either a external boost controller or trickey to fool the DME, the only way you get true DME control over the gates meaning tuning using any option is running the factory style vacuum activated gates like we did, with all that being said, once proefi comes out it will eliminate all this for people who want to spend the money on it. External gates are always better then the internals we used in my opinion but we built our kit the way we did for ease of tuning, also this design doesn't do much to address the pre turbo O2's

Can't vacuum-activated wastegates be used for that manifold ? I don't have experience in this but I was thinking that you can use both styles on those flanges, the ones pictured are maybe just an example.

Vacuum activated canisters for internal gates are pretty rare but some are in use, our cars, some diesels, old Mercedes, etc. I am 99.9% sure no one makes a vacuum actuated external waste gate, it basically flys in the face of general waste gate operation, which are held closed with spring pressure until they see boost and open, ours are held open with spring pressure and close when they see proper vacuum. Honestly its an over complicated and dumb set up that has costed BMW millions of dollars in turbo recalls, and replacement. We only did it that way so the DME could use factory boost control to control the bigger turbos.

Off topic, but do u think BMW did this to control lag or the feeling of lag? Why on earth would they go with such a system? I agree it has cost them a ton, it will be interesting to see if they change with the new m3

That did it because its basically impossible to overboost unless the DME calls for it, loss of vacuum = gates full open, broken hose = loss of boost, bad connection at solenoid = gates full open. This is basically the opposite of the normally closed set up. Where if any of those happen you get gates that don't open. But you can still build in fail safes and so many platforms run it that way BMW just tried to in my opinion to reinvent the wheel and it caused them headaches with all the waste gate flappers rattling.

I was there a few weeks ago and they were talking about going through another revision to move the humps away from the valve cover and creating a heat shield. They relocated a few more things around in Eric's car to make more room. This project has been going on way too long, would be nice to see it run. I need to go over and flash his transmission when I get back from Shift Sector, so I'll try to take some pictures and maybe take it for a quick spin through the parking lot to test the transmission. I was also told it's was on the dyno this past week.
