The work Darton did on that block is freaking amazing, I can't get over how seamless and beautiful the sleeves are.

Chris from hpf "we have seen blocks crack down the cylinder wall due to the thin cylinder walls around the water jacket areas. "

So since more material is used in the jacket area doesnt this reduce the amount of water running thru the motor (cooling it) ... Just a thought.

I just got off the phone with a person who has MUCH experience with racing V8 and BMW engine structures.
He noted that sleeving THIS block will not make it ANY stronger.

I asked if the new "thickness" will help prevent the block from cracking under extreme conditions.
He said, "Yes, but what extreme conditions would cause such a problem?"

I didn't think of that, I'm not sure. Great question though.

If the thickness will prevent it from cracking under harsher conditions then it is stronger.

The block has an inherent weakness as Chris @ HPF stated and I believe the sleeves help cope with that.

Nobody yet... but now with more block strengthening options I'm sure people will.

    Well,
the inherent "weakness" may not be the BLOCK.
If HPF is hoping to prevent UTTER destruction when "something" goes wrong at HIGH PSI and high RPM,
then this sleeving process is vain.
It may or MAY not help, period.

    Who pays for this sleeving?

The customer is paying for the sleeving.

They don't mess with the heads, cams, or raise the redline so high rpm issues don't seem to be a problem and haven't been.

HPF seems to want more material around the pistons, I think they know what they are doing.

I think the tune can also expose the BLOCK to extreme conditions. What ever is weaker will fail first.. So they are building the next weakest link.

I don't WANT... to say that HPF has tuning issues
because they have a corner on the TURBO E46 market and seem to please their customers.
    As well,
I don't know much about the ease or difficulty of tuning.

I DO know that people have already hit 1000whp on an unsleeved S54 block.

    Worst case scenario? OK...
    Necessary? No
The chance that it will help once the engine is DETONATING? take a guess

    a few thoughts

HPF continues to pioneer the field.
Good stuff, but a good look reveals simplicity.

I believe the Stage 4 HPF kits are already pushing above 30psi and making around 900rwhp. They want to push that number up to 1000rwhp, so boost will increase.

Milkt, who is making over 1000rwhp with an unsleeved block?
