I wish I could find the online calculator I had used as it seemed pretty good. You plug in numbers from your dyno sheet, gear ratios and maybe a few other things like tire size and it tells you at each shift which is optimal. On my E40 tune that needs some work on the top end it had me shifting at 6500 for 1-2, 6250 for 2-3 and like 5800 for the rest. Unfortunately calculators also assumed we have traction so I don't know how you would try to figure that out if anybody is limiting power in 1st or 2nd.

I've thought about how to calculate this a few times and every time I do i think that to have accuracy (especially with a manual transmission) you would have to account for time between shifts (slight rpm fall) but more importantly, losing boost, thus the immediate reduction in whp/wtq for the first 1/2-1 second or so of the next gear you jumped into. How much? You'd have to run a few logs with RPM and boost however you shift between gears and get a general idea. For fun I ran a log last night of 2nd to third, and it took me almost a second to get boost back from 11psi at 7100 rpm in 2nd to 11psi again at ~5krpm in 3rd. It took another 0.2 seconds to get it to 16 psi. The drop off in boost will change the effective torque/horsepower curve. Seems hideously complicated.
