    ESS VT2 575 Shake down

One of my buddies recently got a VT2 575 for his E90 DCT. We had event at 4000ft elevation. Super ran 11.9 @ 122mph. 60ft's were 2.0-2.1. Still have to change pulleys & stuff on it as the boost is only 4.5psi up here. 98RON.

    I have an E90 6MT. I have chip & full exhaust. I took some weight out of the car. I ran 12.6 exiting 112-113mph with 1.8-1.9 60 ft's.

There was a stocker there trapping 106mph. I must say everyone was very impressed with the ESS car.

Car ran this week-end at sea-level but had some issue at around 7500rpm. Would not rev past there in some gear. It ran a best of 11.7 but the trap suffered with the issues. I think on one of the runs it trapped 126mph though.

I am doing a few more mods then plan on making an assault on the 11's with my 6MT.

Nice trap speed at elevation for only 4.5 psi.

    Would love to see slips!

Good stuff Sherwin, your car did exceptional as well. Nice traps on the ESS car, sounds like his car went into "safe" mode.
When you can please get some Vbox times on both cars, at altitude and sea level, it would be great to see the differences, and I'm wondering if you can beat my 10.7 with a 6MT! Click here to enlarge

That's good, best I trapped @5.5 lbs was 123...ect kept dropping rpm's to high and kept spinning tires...best I got was 12.2. What tires did your friend use w/ the ess kit.

You can't really compare it like that as it isn't a USA NHRA certified track.

Not taking anything away from these runs, but USA drag strips and the rest of world calculate traps differently. In the US prior to 1989 3 beams at the end of the track would be used to calculate the trap speed, one 66 feat before the end, one at the end, and one 66 feet after. This means the trap would be calculated using the last beam which would inflate the trap compared to what we see today at US tracks. The NHRA made the change to 2 beams to give the appearance that cars were slowing down and also get cars off the gas faster so as not to accelerate past the 1/4 mile marker. It was also done for insurance liability reasons.

Pretty much all the tracks in the rest of the world that use the older style setup which gives inflated traps. Even if NHRA certified, you can get NHRA certification in the rest of the world with the 3 beam setup. I would like to see the slips personally to know for sure.

This is also why I don't compare 1/4 slips from the rest of the wold to here as without the same NHRA standards for approval it doesn't make for a good comparison. With 60-130, it doesn't matter.

DLS, we had a VBox in each car & the trap was about 1-2 km/h less on Vbox. The times were about the same as the track's times.

Interesting, traps should be higher on the Vbox.

    What track was this?

Hey bud, I'm sure the car can do it, I'm not sure if the driver is up to scratch though Click here to enlarge

I only have the VBox data for my car for now. When the Super comes back up from his coastal excursion I will get the memory card from his VBox & upload.

I think you may have a point on the trap speeds as the Vbox showed lower traps than the track. The times were pretty much spot on. For example, my best run according to the tracks timing was 12.691 & the trap on that run was 112mph.

The Vbox has the run as follows:

12.691 @ 112 vs 12.68 @ 11.25mph. So the times are close, but the trap is about 1mph out. I think you are right about different tracks having different methods of calculating exit speed. Either way, 12.68 is definitely the time. Here's a time-to-speed graph of that run:

You can see the elevation on the data, it's just under 4000ft. That graph has zero smoothing & what I can see is the 1-2 shift, but I'm struggling to see any shifts after that. I'm ripping through the upper gears like a madman. If I line up with a DCT & do in gear rolling starts I don't lose any ground during the shifts (except 1st to 2nd of course).

I will go down to sea-level soon & try to better my 6MT 60-130 time. I think the extra revs is going to help a shade.

Just spoke to the super owner. He reckon his run at altitude showed as 11.91 @ 121 on the Vbox. So we know the tracks traps are 1 mph too high. So the times are pretty consistent but we'll stick to using the Vbox speeds in future.

Obviously the super was having some traction issues & the NA car can leave the line with some big revs (cutting 1.8 60ft's). But the super is miles quicker once it gets going. Super is DCT, my car is 6MT.

Well this event was at 4000ft, so the 63 ran a best of 12.2. The very next week-end a few of those cars went to a National drag event at sea-level & the 63 ran 11.8 three times. It's the fastest 63 in our country. Has the usual mods, chip, exhaust, pulley, intake, slicks. Nothing major.

But looks like you were right, and there's about half second one can gain going down to sea-level.

Unfortunately our tracks aren't really up to scratch in terms of timeslips. Only one track prints slips. The others put up the results on their websites. Which is why we all have our own Vbox's for keeping track of our times. I can get the Vbox "slips" of almost all of the cars.

I don't think we'll ever see slips tbh as the tracks dont even have slip printers. Unless its a national event at our only internationally certified track, Tarlton International Raceway. So I guess the times will have to be unofficial & more for conversation. Unless I can send you the raw VBox files and that can count as official times after you verify it. I will be going down to sea-level end of September for an event.

Quick update. The ESS car bettered its time to 11.8secs on the same 4000ft track. Quite impressive considering the altitude and the fact that there is no track prep.

ET's are always nice, but the traps are what more people here are looking for.

ANy chance on getting those vbox files sent over?

I am sure when M&M remember the thread he might update but this time round I was at the track and did not see a Vbox in the car. What I did notice though is that the DCT was overheating.

What do you think your car will trap LostMarine?
