    Has anyone used VAC Differential Cooler?

    Hi everyone,


    I am planning on getting a clutch type LSD some time this spring and I am thinking about how to properly cool the diff. Even though the finned diff covers are easier and simpler, I do not think they are sufficient to properly cool a clutch type differential.


    I am interested in this differential cooling kit by VAC:

    Comes with pump, cooler, lines, fittings and a thermoswitch which will automatically turn on/off the cooling pump.


    Has anyone played with this or other diff cooling kits on the E90?
    How loud are those pumps?

    Not a fan of the Mocal pumps,at least in my experience not that reliable.
    Have seen quite a few diffs and sequential gearboxes blow up on the track due to the Mocal pumps failing...

    I prefer using the VDO units.

    Thank you for the feedback. I appreciate it. I might have to build my own kit which would probably be cheaper anyway.

    Unless you're planning to do endurance racing, you don't need a diff fluid cooler. Good fluid and a properly finned cover will be more than adequate.

    Yes.

    BMW has been putting clutch type diffs in its M cars for decades without separate diff fluid coolers. So have loads of other manufacturers.

    True! My understanding however is that the M differentials were mostly made by Drexler and usually contain 8 clutch plates. The OS Giken TCD LSD that I am most probably going to purchase has 20 clutch plates. I am not exactly sure how this affects anything so that's why I thought I'd ask here...

    Looks like overkill to me. We haven't really gauged diff temps on our cars but I doubt such massive cooling is needed. AFAIK there have been next to,no aftermarket LSD failures. therefore I'd stick with a finned diff cover which also allows to fill in more oil. That should suffice.

    The OS Giken diffs actually run cooler than other clutch type diffs. The finned cover should be useful but not necessary especially for track days 20-30 minute sessions.

    I've boiled the fluid on my Quaife LSD 335 during 20-30 min sessions using the stock plate. Now with the VAC race length finned diff, I've had no issues.

    Can't comment on the diff cooling system.

    This is a race car solution. If you want a little extra security you may want to consider our finned diff cover. The OS runs really really well as is, you will be surprised with how good it is :-)
