    Another AMG engineer poached: BMW takes chassis engineer Arnd Meyer from AMG

    What is going on here? AMG continues to lose engineers and important personnel to the competition. AMG recently lost their engine guru Friedrich Eichler who is responsible for many of the excellent new AMG powerplants to the Volkswagen Group and now chassis engineer Arnd Meyer is gone. This makes for two high profile engineering losses at AMG within a month span. One way to positively look at it is AMG's competitors want who AMG has and clearly AMG has really stepped their performance game up getting a lot of attention.

    The engine guru leaving hurts. Combine that with their chassis guru and AMG needs to find some high profile replacements to fill these shoes. The problem is, it seems the best guys for the job were the ones that are now gone. So, opportunity presents itself at AMG and BMW M is able to deal a blow to their rival.

    Arnd Meyer was responsible for all the recent Black Series chassis work. Perhaps this is the first step in BMW taking on AMG's Black Series? We will find out soon enough.

    Doesnt make sense to me being that bmw already make better chassy and handling cars than benz

    This is true but it seems they are aiming at higher end performance. The Black Series cars are beating BMW's around the track...

    I don't think it's necessarily a good or a bad move. Considering this; if BMW built a lighter chassis, their engines would be perfect for the chassis. Having the AMG engineer doesn't help when you think about the weight and chassis setup of the Black Series AMG's. BMW has built better cars in the past than the BS AMG's. Consider the M3 GTS, M3 CSL, M5 CSL even etc. The AMG's are a brute force, however, still the chassis is too heavy. BMW has the coin to build lighter chassis throughout all the series but I don't see the reason that they have not. In fact, all manufacturers are building their cars heavier with the exception of the majority of top of the line manufacturers. SRT has managed to keep the Viper on a diet, Ferrari, Porsche etc all have lightweight chassis. It's all BMW needs to move towards more of what everyone wants. That's their next step and it looks like it will be coming in the M3/4 chassis. If they keep to the rumors and develop that chassis to be lighter than the E92 with 40% or 50% more torque, even if has the same power, it will be much more potent and a much more force for the rivals. I see this change coming very soon for BMW. The M engineers are seeing this as well. A lot of model refreshes are coming soon, but different than any other model year, because they are coming sooner. BMW hates losing at anything and I truly believe that the new chassis will be lighter, more aerodynamic, and the best we've ever seen from BMW.

    Realistically, as was BMW. In fact, thinking back to the E34 M5, not only were they all aluminum but hand built. I'm thinking we're going to start seeing a move back to the old days. Following BMW's recent moves I am a firm believer that they are just trying to go back to all steel bodies to find a suitable and cheaper solution in aluminum manufacturing.

    The M5 and M6 are already MB-like in their formula of sticking a huge motor into a heavy chassis. So BMW picks up the MB chassis guru to tune the behemoths? If I wanted a Merc, I'd buy one. So much for BMW being the performance-centered alternative to the big Mercs.

    Seems now like the only hope for a desirable Bimmer will be if they put an S65 into the Z4.

    AMG and ///M do very similar things; they take higher end vehicles and combine comfort & performance better than most other manufacturers can do. The difference is BMW leans a little more toward the handling, and AMG leans a little more toward the comfort. Neither will completely sacrafice one over the other (except for very limited versions e.g. CSL, Black Series). BMW cars are getting heavier and heavier, and the AMG engineers are already used to dealing with extra bulk. I definitely think they have some knowledge to bring to BMW.

    I didn't know they had it was early as the E34. That makes this all that much more embarrassing.

    Nowadays they mirror each other although AMG has gotten better at being AMG while M has gotten worse at being M.

    As well as the Corvette and Benz with the SL. Aluminum chassis where being talked about years ago by BMW but no go. It may happen now but dont bet on carbon. Carbon tech from Boing will be left for the race program. No way where getting a carbon M3.

    I honestly don't follow. If you view VW Group as a whole, you have:

    Porsche
    Audi
    Lamborghini
    Bentley
    Bugatti

    Plenty of high performance engine know-how in that portfolio. I wonder if the engine guy was more about the return of VW to F1 than any road car needs.
