    F80 M3 Engine unofficially based on N54

Quote from a C&D article about the new F80 M3.

Powertrains: The M3 will be powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six related to the one in the 335i. It would be wrong to assume, however, that BMW's M performance division simply resorted to reprogramming the ECU. Virtually all parts will be exclusive to the M3; it will be a relatively high-revving unit that should produce roughly 420 horsepower. There will be two transmission choices: a six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
It doesn't come straight out and say it's based on the N54 and of course it's all speculation at this point, but it seems to be a safe bet (no point converting an N55 to TT...). Anybody think there's potential to rob the engine for parts? Internals? Turbos?

I really think that almost everything there is wrong... It will definitely have more than 420 HP, it should without a doubt have a slightly larger displacement a'la S54, and I don't think it will be even relatively high revving. Think 7500 max.

After seeing the pic of the engine bay ill say the only similarities are that it's an I6 and TT. I'm sure that they are not reusing N54 parts on the new M motor. As big of a fan of the n54 as I am I know that that is not something BMW would do with its flagship. It will be all new and badass.

all that sounds great... except wtf to the bolded

do you really think they would do such a complex setup? how difficult would this be to tune in the aftermarket?

Unlikely they'll "reuse" but I wouldn't be surprised motors were VERY close..N55 is already there as its closed deck and has valvetronic except its missing N54's bottom end strength and additional 0.3L of displacement

+1 electrical meaning it will have a batt bank and use an ac drive motor on the crank or the wheels? What leads you to believe this?

Do you think this is a step back?

BMW needs to up the HP of the M3 imo for the price they are charging, what do you think?

I would much prefer to see it rev out to 8k...

Electrical charger (or turbo if you will..i dont like referring to it as a turbo as there is no exhaust energy being used or turbine)...think of it as a electrical fan/compressor

I'm more surprised that BMW is going to continue making an M3 sedan, when the E90 M3 sedan had sales numbers that were abysmal compared to even the convertible sales.

So you think the current v8 is inferior to a 3.3 i6 tt? .3l isn't huge, I don't want to start a n54 vs m3 debate, I am not disagreeing just curious...

How can they keep the weight down if they add an electric motor? Obviously they can use expensive materials to keep the weight down but is the cost worth it?

Will the engine have the same problem of n54 with running out of steam at 7200?

The motor is going to take the best design elements from the N54 & N55 that have now seen ~6 years of real world R&D/aftermarket abuse & expand on it -- increased displacement, forged internals (PLEASE), increased rev range + (hopefully) no fueling or cooling related issues.

Really wishing they stayed with air/air intercooling instead of switching to air/water like on the S63, feel like intercooling upgrade is going to be difficult to package & really pricey

That's not too difficult... That V8, power and torque wise is inferior to nearly everything.

How can they keep the weight down if they add an electric motor? Obviously they can use expensive materials to keep the weight down but is the cost worth it?

Will the engine have the same problem of n54 with running out of steam at 7200?
So what?, if it is making awesome power and tq by that time? BMW can't build a high revving turbo motor, they would have done it for the M5. Anything above 7200 would be pushing it...

That means battery weight + added complexity no? Where would the charger fit in? On the crank, at the wheels, spinning the turbo early?

So you think the current v8 is inferior to a 3.3 i6 tt? .3l isn't huge, I don't want to start a n54 vs m3 debate, I am not disagreeing just curious...

How can they keep the weight down if they add an electric motor? Obviously they can use expensive materials to keep the weight down but is the cost worth it?

Will the engine have the same problem of n54 with running out of steam at 7200?
Who said I said it's inferior? I said the car will be sick. I never even mentioned the engineClick here to enlarge You don't want to start a debate, but you kinda are lol.....

I believe this next gen m will be faster, lighter, and handle better, yes. For the sake of the m brand evolution, let's hope I'm right. If it's not, I'll buy a e92 and supercharge it.

Who knows what the engine will have for a redline....

How does one easily do 3.3L on an n54 dzenno? The R/S sucks and the bore spacing last I looked was pretty tight.

Unlikely they'll "reuse" but I wouldn't be surprised motors were VERY close..N55 is already there as its closed deck and has valvetronic except its missing N54's bottom end strength and additional 0.3L of displacement
The N55 is closed deck? I think the N54 and N55 are both open, but I could be wrong...
