    Official NHL 2013 season thread

Not sure how many hockey fans we have but let's give this a shot.

Ducks take the season opener 7-3. Considering what a disappointment the team was last season this is a good start. One game but still, surprisingly good start.

I'll see these two teams play again next week.

I don't know. Seems they wanted to group the Eastern Canadians in C.

As much as you can believe the guys talking in the studio during intermission, part of the division break down was based on reducing travel distances to reduce money and time spent on traveling.

The real question is can the Penguins get a win tonight to increase the streak to 13?

I agree with this completely, that's the main motivation.

I think it's more that can the Ducks stop this small skid they are now on.

That may be. I've never been one to follow sports too closely so I don't really know what's going on around the league. I love the home team though, and have very found memories of being young and watching the '91 and '92 cup playoffs. I am very happy Lemieux bought a stake in the team and turned the franchise around. The city almost lost its hockey team.

So it looks like the Ducks have lost their last three? How many games are left in the season for the Ducks? It's better to get this kind of stuff out in the regular season. They are leading their division by ten points, so a spot in the playoffs should almost be guaranteed for them, wouldn't you think?

Oh ya not worried about playoffs but losing back to backs is concerning. Especially losing at home.

I enjoyed watching the finals in '08 and '09 with the Pens and the Wings. That was some good hockey.

It's getting exciting with this win streak the Penguins are on. The record is 17 games, set by the Pens in the 92-93 season. We were knocked out of the playoffs that year. I know lots of superstition surrounds hockey, so maybe it's better we don't break the record.

The Ducks were hot. Then the Hawks were hot. Now the Pens are hot.

I think we have our three best teams.

Hopefully the Penguins aren't hot too soon. We don't want to end up peaking too early, then falling off during the playoffs.

Everyone in Pittsburgh is on the edge of their seats for a status update on Marc-Andre Fleury. Apparently there is something up with his neck. However, according to the Pittsburgh coaching staff, he was not supposed to play tonight anyway.

And now Letang is out again for 7-10 days with a broken toe I think. Those are our two best defensive players, though Letang lends a lot to the offense as well.

We've got the Jets tonight and they skated circles around us the first time we played them, but we evened the score the second time, so this, the third time these teams meet, is a toss up in my book.

We just picked up Iginla who is apparently a pretty strong forward along with the acquisition of Morrow and a big defense man, whose name escapes me at the moment. If Fleury is healthy and Letang and Malkin both come back healthy before the playoffs, it could be an interesting spring here. Hell even if Malkin can't come back (although he is skating in practice) the Penguins have shown they can score enough goals to win games without him.

We'll see how he does. He's definitely not young, but probably not too old yet either. I guess there are some issues with immigration right now. Damn Canadians, always causing trouble.

If all goes well in three to four weeks, Dr. Dattilo said, Mr. Crosby won't even necessarily need special headgear to protect his jaw "because his jaw will be just as strong as before, and probably stronger because it will be metal-reinforced." [emphasis added]

I LOL'd when I read this. They should have just done the other side while they were in there for good measure. We can rebuild him. We have the technology.
