N63 xDrive performance figures from the 2012 F12 BMW 650i plus curb weight - Way too heavy 4673 pounds, 1/4 mile in 12.9@107

MotorTrend tested the 2012 F12 BMW 650i convertible with the optional all wheel drive xDrive system. Very nice that BMW offers optional all wheel drive on the 650i and the convertible F12 version. The all wheel drive does not come without a penalty however with curb weight ballooning to an incredible 4673 pounds. It is hard to defend that kind of heft in a company touting Efficient Dynamics with lightweight materials.

As a reference point, BMW states the F12 650i in rear wheel drive configuration weighs 4520 pounds. So the addition of all wheel drive adds a not so insignifcant 153 pounds to the already heavy 4500 pound car. Imagine what the weight would bloat to if they included a convertible hardtop?

This being a 2012 model it does not have the updated and more powerful N63TU engine which will come in 2013 models. The standard 400 horsepower and 450 pound-foot of torque turbocharged V8 does fairly well considering the weight with 60 miles per hour coming in 4.4 seconds and 1/4 mile in 12.9@107.1. Respectable but despite two turbos and a larger V8 motor this car would struggle to pull away from an E46 M3 on the highway. The E46 M3 that came out in 2001 with a 333 horsepower 3.2 liter six-cylinder. Where is the Efficient and Dynamic part again?

The car will get faster when it gets the 50 horsepower bump but that will only serve to mask its absurdly high curb weight.

I'd call it a yacht but its weight is closer to a cruise ship. Imagine what it would do with that engine if it had a curb weight of 3673 instead.

Hard to believe my FJ Cruiser weighs about 300 lbs less than this 6'er. BMW has lost the plot completely.

It looks like they built this thing out of lead, pretty poor from BMW indeed.

Just compare the weights of 650i coupe, coupe xi, convertible and convertible xi, and you'll see that the weight increase is due it being convertible rather than xi.

But xi obviously contributes. Another 153 pounds on the already heavy convertible.

Absolutely. I'm just saying that it being convertible contributes even more.

True. The 6 is just heavy in general though.

Yes, more like a highway cruiser than an agile sports car... which is fine as far as Bmw has light cars as well. M4, M3, M2...

"Light" cars? M4 and M3 are yet to be determined and I guess we will see on the M2.

I'm hoping for the best. I'm a bit worried though.
