Wine already sucks enough of my time/budget. I have a feeling this would just be another drain but I'll keep an open mind and if a tasting comes my way...

My Staple used to be Jameson. Still like Jameson, but neat, it's gotta be something more like Jameson Limited Reserve, or Crown Royal XR, which is just plain excellent. Never really got into Johnny, I just don't get the hype, it's good, but over hyped. For something not so mainstream, woodford reserve isn't bad either.

You should give Wisers very old 18 a try. I have 4 Crown XR hid away and it is getting hard to find. Just for some info on the XR, it is the last of the whiskey from the Waterloo distillery that burnt down. It is very special for sure.

I have a sophisticated wine palate yet I can't really tell the difference between these whiskeys and scotches. I guess maybe I need to drink them more often.

Depends, just like you have some people who like Dos Equis and others who can't stand drinking Miller, Bud, and Coors the same goes for Whiskeys. I only drink Scotch neat... everything else has to be mixed for me. I just don't like the taste after I got into scotch.

If you're thinking about trying out scotch and you like wine, a madeira casket scotch such as the Balvenie might be a good idea. It is a little on the sweeter and 'wine-y' side.

That's interesting, it is easier for me to taste the differences in whiskey than in wine. I like both, enjoy both, I just get overwhelmed with all of the choices when it comes to wine. Whiskey/scotch to me is very easy to get the subtle sweetness that may or may not exist, and the overall strength of flavor.

Sure have. Calloused from drinking crappy blended Canadian Crown piss through the young years.

Nice call on the Wisers. Never see that stuff here in Denver.

Still doesn't hold a candle to Pendleton for a blend.

Right on Click here to enlarge You should give the Crown XR a chance if you can find it. It is like no other. I also over indulged in Crown royal and 2l bottles of coke for a good decade of youth. LOL

Crown Royal is my drink of choice but I did not care for the XR. Special Reserve and Crown maple are my favorites!!!!

Took your advice, the local ABC just got a good sized shipment in of the XR, I bought two bottles and may have to go back for more....I just couldn't help it but open one up that night...

Crown, My all time favorite party whiskey. Not the best whiskey, but the one I go to most often for a bunch of friends coming over when I don't feel like spending a bunch of money on a whiskey for everyone else to guzzle down. At one point I had so many of those purple bags I was going to have someone sew them together to make a duffle bag or something.

It is, red wax, great choice for something to mix, not bad straight, but better mixed, it's only like $25/bottle I think

Makers Mark for mixing. Woodford Reserve for sipping. If you want to try some boutique distilleries I personally love Stranahan's (you can only get it in Colorado currently) and Breckenridge Distillery (should be able to find more broadly). They have both won many a gold medal and are fantastic. Stranahan's is great because they bottle it at a slightly higher proof so it is actually made to be mixed with a small amount of water and/or served on ice. Makes it incredibly mellow and smooth.
