E28 turbo intro and build thread

I signed up for this forum a while ago and realized I haven't posted a intro. It's a 85 535i 5spd. Exterior mods are euro bumpers, euro headlights, euro rear wing, and Hartge H5S replica front spoiler. I boosted my E28 back in 2010. The initial setup was a stock K27 turbo and manifold from a 745i, Tial MVS waste gate, HKS SSQ BOV, 30lb injectors, TCD timing chip, Begi FMU, homemade water/meth kit, and a 3" exhaust with wastegate dump. The car made 270RWHP and 330RWTQ @15psi non intercooled. Here is a shot of that setup.

I ran that setup for a little over a year and my only issue I had was killing a new stock Sach's clutch kit a year into having the car boosted. I upgraded the clutch with a TCD Stage 3 full organic clutchmasters clutch with a modified Sach's pressure plate.

I was coming back home from a vintage BMW meet about 3hrs from where I live. I was having some fun on the highway with a friend of mine and did a long 5th gear pull. The car was running great but I felt a slight hesitation for a second. I let off and everything seemed fine. I kept driving for another 45min until we hit traffic on the highway due to a accident and the coolant temp started rising quickly. I pulled off the highway and popped the hood to see the cooling system completely pressurized. The stock headbolts had given up and I lifted the head on that long pull. It was time to strip her down and do some upgrades Click here to enlarge.

The bottom end looked pretty good. I pulled the rod bearings and they all looked fine. I decided to do a bottom end reseal and send the head off to get rebuilt. I also picked up some upgraded parts for when it went back together.

I picked up a upgraded K27 turbo. This turbo is using a Garret 60mm compressor wheel. new/old turbo together to see the size difference.

I also picked up a P&P MS2 Extra standalone with 4bar map sensor. I'm running 50lb Ford Racing injectors, AEM Eugo wideband, and DIY autotune boost solenoid.

Almost ready to go back in the car with TCD valve cover, ARP head studs, Cometic MLS head gasket, new water pump, T-stat housings, timing chain guides, etc. Converted to a M30B35 harmonic balancer and trigger wheel for the MS setup.

Engine back in. Replaced the entire cooling system, cap, rotor, wires, and added a MSD blaster 2 coil and 6AL ignition box.

First day I drove her back home from the shop. I also added a TCD 1 off A/W intercooler to keep those IAT's in check Click here to enlarge.

After I had a good street tune on her I was getting tired of the wastegate dump and decided to have a new downpipe made. I also needed a new intake since my filter was off of the turbo. Here are some shots of the new down pipe.

I built a box around the filter with some drains for when it rains. I don't have pictures of that box though.

    More to come....

Dyno time! Here is a shot of my new vs old setup at 15psi. I was really pleased to see my upgrades making such a big difference! Unfortunately I had some MAP sensor issues after this pull. I had oil in the map signal line from how my crankcase vent was setup. I have now redesigned it and won't have to worry about oil getting in that signal line any longer.

I am now running 20psi and this thing hauls! I believe i'm around 400 RWHP and 450+ RWTQ @20psi.

Wheel time! I picked up some ACS type II race wheels from a buddy of mine that were in terrible condition. I disassembled them and hand polished the lips. I filed all of the curb marks out of the lips and wet sanded them with 800, 1000, 1500, and 2000 grit. Then I hit them with some chrome polish from a local truck stop. Here is a lip half polished.

I sanded and painted the barrels to clean them up. I wanted to powder coat the barrels, but the cheapest place I could find around here wanted to charge close to $500 for all 4 barrels. I decided to paint them and use the $500 for other mods to the car. Here is a barrel after paint.

Here is the paint i used on them.

Yup. It's a crappy video I made with my new gopro hero 3. I'm new to video editing and still have some learning to do. I'm also having issues with the mic on my gopro. Anyway, you guys are more than welcome to check it out.

This video should be of way higher quality if you recorded it with the brand new GoPro. Editing is fine short sweet and to the point lol

Sick $#@!ing car man! I'd love to own a boosted e28. I'm still trying to pick one up as we speak, keep making videos!! lol

I believe the issue was how I saved the file from Imovie. I'm still having issues with the mic making a bunch of crackling and popping sounds even when not in motion. Don't worry, more movies are on the way Click here to enlarge

Digging this thread, you look like you are revving much higher. How much?

    Also, who is tuning this?

Yes sir! It needs some work though. Currently the car isn't running, needs brakes, new oil pan, oil pan gasket, and a clutch pedal assembly. Hopefully thats it but we'll see once I start digging into it

Nice score! Let me know if you need any parts. I have a 87 535i that I am more than likely going to part out. It's a auto with black interior.

How's your interior looking? The one that's in the car is kinda beat but I really don't care. Once I start ripping it apart we'll definitely be chatting as I want to slap a 5857 on mine Click here to enlarge
