Los - DIY... for most $#@!. For $#@! like electrical have someone who's familiar with code etc. IDK if you can get away without pulling permits but you might be able to. Depending that could save you money but you could get $#@!ed if you do the work without pulling them (ask me how I know). Technically the $#@! has to have permits pulled and get inspected. Use metal studs, they're cheap, light and easy to work with. Insulating is easy, hanging drywall is easy, get a pro to tape it/finish, and paint it yourself.

FWIW, contractors are usually marking up their $#@! a lot, like ass rape your mouth mark up (ask me how I know). There are tons of out of work carpenters/contractors who provide labor, you provide material, blah blah blah. I know a few if you need contacts, the guy who's the best works for about 40/hr or so. Could easily half that bill.

$40/hr plus materials is about right....code..specific to the bathroom plumbing and electric is the major concern...which then prolly leads to permits for all. Still doesnt mean you can't get away cheap for the rest if you are willing to work or hire mexican. Taping/mudding is the biggest pain with drywall.

2 more estimates came in. One at 18k (no chance in hell I'm going with him) another said 30k which is the prob the most realistic option. They've only been in business 3 years with a new product.

$30k seems good but still a touch high for a basement (though hard to visualize the size). I mean people redo kitchens for like $10-15k and that seems like it's more work.

Do the work cheap where you can with a handyman crew and use a company for the hard $#@!.

yea, everything is diyable except the drywall finishing. got guys too if you need.

The other option is to basically become your own GC. Instead of telling one company "finish it" you pick and choose your crews for each step along the way, again supplying your own $#@! for the most part. Would be a middle, ground, much less time consuming than DIY, but you can come out well ahead of that 40k

And FWIW, "supplying your own $#@!" for the most part means they workers go to home depot, get what they need, and give you the receipt to reimburse them.

Dont even want to finish the basement to be honest. I'd rather move to a house and end it. Ball n chain wants to stay here
