    Manhole covers

How come they are almost always placed directly in the path of the tire. If you try to go to the left of it you end up to close to the left lane or curb. If you try to make it go underneath the car you and up in or to close to the right lane. Wouldn't it be safer if they were placed directly in the middle of the lane?

Agree entirely. Unfortunately, it was where the pipe was placed. When the road was first built there was much less traffic. Today it's such a nuisance because moving over a half lane can cause an accident or worse. It honestly wouldn't be so bad if they just leveled it out with the road like it is in more modern parts of town, where there was more 'concrete' planning done about today's road system.

That's what I was thinking as well, but even with the newer roads being built I've seen the holes end up in the same place. Biggest fear is hitting them or the cover collapsing when I go over it.

    And this happening...

In the USA that would be a huge liability for the city...
