I don't know where this is, but I would never do that in nj, your just asking for a deer to jump out and that road is way to narrow anyway

Damn I love listening to that thing launch! I've always wanted to do a nasty 996TT build, but after seeing a friends receipts from his, I realized how endless the expense can be to own/mod one. I just drove the hell out of his while he owned it Click here to enlarge

Mustang FTW, 400+ windsor motors are like pennies to build and make reliable power on nitrous all freaking day. 9's is typical for a car like that on the juice with slicks. The talon is insane, the porsche is nice too. Good runs but the road is extremely narrow.

Would it kill these guys to go to a drag strip and get some meaningful data? It might kill them not to.

Your very correct in the perspective that for $70k you can be smashing on 997's but with a car that's 8-10 years old already. Repairs will still be pretty rough on the wallet.

This was just in the past couple years with my friends 996TT Tip. His receipts in mods and repairs totaled over $90k and was only pushing around 600 crank. His mods were excessively expensive since all upgrades were done by the dealer against my recommendation to use my friend over at Boostlogic. Also his taste in parts is rather expensive ($15k OEM GT2 CF Spoiler/HRE P40's on PS2's/OEM GT3 Seats/Alcantera Roll Cage) On top of that every service bill was still in excess of $5k. The worse was the intermediate shaft bolt failure which required the entire motor to be torn down.. $30k I think it was.. Just crazy when things start going wrong on that car.

On the brighter side of 996 ownership, it was a fun car to drive when it was running Click here to enlarge

Here's 2 vids of me running with him in the M5 back when I only had RPi scoops (4 people in my car)

The problem isn't your car as much as your friend pointlessly burning money. You can do a cheap K16 billet turbo upgrade and have a bunch of power. The GT1 motor is pretty solid overall. The car is reliable. I have no idea why your friend spent so much on service.

$30k for a motor rebuild is insane too.

30k on a motor rebuild is not uncommon. I know several well known dry sump GT block builders, and all said and done for new rings, bearings etc plus labor will run you about 20-30k.

I have one GT3 motor under my belt...without the proper tools, I dont think Id ever do it again. (and Porsche Motorsports is a really PITA trying to get ring compressor tools from them, dont like to sell it to anyone but dealers for dealer use)

It's not uncommon but it's absurd considering what you can buy 996tt's for now.

I wouldn't pay that and complete 996tt motors can be sourced for under $10k now.

Your correct as far as the wastefulness goes.. I was all over him to get it away from the dealer. A good of mine friend was the fabricator at Boostlogic at the time and offered up a nice package at a much more reasonable price. In his defense, he did get all the internals replaced during the teardown. Either GT2 or GT3 internals IIRC and a warranty from the dealer.

I was in the bidding to buy it off him but another friend out in Cali was willing to pay a lot more than it was worth IMO. I told him SELL IT when I heard the other guys final offer.. $$$

you should take pride; that is serious business. need a new clutch? pull the engine. need a new belt? pull the engine. got money to burn? why not pull the engine.

lol in all serious business, the 993 and up do not require the motor to come out. You can change the clutch leaving the motor in the car. Belts are simple to do, which is why they include 2 belts on the aircooled models and all the required tools to change it on the side of the road.

1994 and below, the motor/trans has to come out before separating the halves, and to be honest its really not that hard...on race day I was required to have the assembly out in less than 45 minutes.
