    GAH

can anyone shed some light on how to remove the timing chain, chain tensioner, vanos unit bolts?

getting a 1/2" wrench on the vanos unit bolts does not move even the tiniest bit (yes i have the camshafts locked down)

everything i can find on removing the chain tensioner comes down to 'remove all bolts, unclip red bit from black bit and remove'... seemingly ignoring the fact there's still a chain in the way!.. all bolts removed, chain... kinda looseish, but nowhere near loose enough to remove from sprockets?

extremely frustrating.. i swear this bentley manual was the biggest waste of $100 i've ever had.

well... managed to loosed the chain off enough... gave up on removing the vanos sender bolt, i don't have a breaker bar anywhere...

got all bar one bolt off the inlet camshaft bearing

wanna know why not the last one?... yeah it's completely rounded off, even with the proper female torx bit..... and with how stupidly torqued on they are, screwed if i know how it's going to be extracted now o_o

"Easy out" which is a Counter-threaded pointy screw made of hardened steel, might be worth investigating.

So I was thinking about you today, buddy Click here to enlarge

I had to do bearing ledges and a cam tray on an N52......
Same thing applies for an N54, just different tools (but they look the same)
So I took some quicky snaps with my phone to show you whats up with the tools and stuff.

that bracket pushes down a cylinder, so the cam tray damn near lays perfectly flat.
Those bearing ledges are now a plastic type material, not metal like original.
    New cam tray.
    cam goes on top.
put the top of the tray on.
install special tool brackets that align everything.
    Torque cam caps.
Then time it (sorry no pics! Click here to enlarge)

Cool, thanks for the pics!.. N52 Valvetrain certainly looks a bit more complex than the N54's

and this is why i'm going to give the assembly to a shop! Click here to enlarge (since i doubt it'll cost more than the couple grand worth of tools i'd need for it? hahah)

got motivated today and swung a wrench a few times (and purchased the most magical tool ever, a small breaker bar. so much win!)

turbo 2 vomited an unreasonable amount of oil after removal (pretty well the housing was full) which i am going to assume from sitting so long, the seals are probably toast?

head's off, cbf carrying it to where i've got everything laid out at 9:30pm though (i should post pics of that room too hah), @Kirst 's help is needed lol

will post pics tomorrow night Click here to enlarge

engine is now almost entirely disassembled - could probably have it 100% in an hour or two of pottering around on it.. just gotta degrease it all, clean off the head for transport etc.

    - waiting for some place to be able to sell me a valvetrain, then i can send the head off to a good shop locally (well, within australia).. hopefully within the next couple of months, with christmas in the way Click here to enlarge

    - get the transmission de-corroded sometime soon (flange is pretty rusty) and checked out at the local transmission specialists

    - then get all the rest.. pistons, rods, studs... all gaskets, plugs blah blah

then reassemble.. and probably new turbos.

and by 'reassemble' i mean half bolt something up, realize i'm missing a few bolts.. order some bolts.. rinse repeat for a while haha

Funnily enough I removed the front turbo on my new engine yesterday so I can put my RBs on and it was full of oil also. I'm talking full to the brim and even leaking out the inlet tube. The car was not smoking or anything when it was removed so I'm wondering why this was the case. Pretty strange that our turbos are both in exactly the same condition. The rear turbo was perfect.

was it sitting for any time before you removed it, or any issues present whatsoever?

    very strange indeed

it was my rear turbo i meant by turbo 2 just to clear any confusion lol

About a month or so IIRC.

I'm a bit miffed as I wanted to sell them as the wastegates aren't bad on them even compared next to my RBs.

I have a spare engine sitting here so LMK if you need anything. Still haven't decided if I'm parting it out or sell it whole just yet.

No need for springs, no aftermarket cams exist. These factory springs are actually very nice.

oh awesome - retainers/keepers? Click here to enlarge Click here to enlarge

I'd be keen for the +1mm set, that's as large as the N54 can safely go, with no spare room on the intake yeah? (also, it's worth the extra expense going the enlarged yes? haha)

really no need for springs? even for a really high boost single that sees redline+ often? fair enough - easy ish enough to upgrade down the track anyway should the product exist, if anyone finds out they're an issue - what do you think the OEM items should be capable of?

    exciting Click here to enlarge

guess i should call them up and see when they can fit me in then haha
