What's a good commuter car that is fun and can take cheap mods?

I need a car that gets 30+ mpg highway because I will be moving farther away from where I work and I dont want to drive the BMW.

Needs to take miles like Miley Cyrus takes cock.
Needs to be mod friendly, like a chip, or pulley or something, gives me +15% hp.
Needs to be reliable and overall cheap and comfortable, easy for me to work on and maintain with basic garage and hand tools.

Here are my current choices from most wanted to least.

    1. Mini Cooper S, can anyone give me suggestions as to which years are the best? Some came supercharged and some came turbo, which one to get?

    2. VW GTI, love the engine in this car and a chip makes it even better. Not looking to go crazy, also I hear gas mileage isnt that good.

    3. Honda Civic Si, I owned this car once before and it is to date my favorite car I ever owned, however it takes a lot of money to get any boost in power out of it.

    4. Fiat 500 SS, dunno much about it. Looks like it could be fun if modded, not sure if mods exist? Seems to be the slowest of the bunch.

Please throw some suggestions my way. I was thinking of getting a smart car and turbocharging it, problem is, even with the turbo it does 0-60 in like 10 seconds lol sad... Anyway, that was just a joke, no smart car. I am not a hipster, I actually care about how stupid I look. So please let me know what you think and keep ideas coming.

^ $#@! you guys are making me want that car again, I loved that car... But what about the cooper S? I hear with a pulley swap it's pretty quick.

You'll need i/h/e and a tune to wake the Civic Si up, but from my understanding, those mods are cheap, at least compared to BMW parts.

I was never more happier with a 15.1@96 mph car in my whole life!!

If I have to give up the N54, that's what I'd get. I would say the Mazdaspeed 3, but those motors pop even stock, so I wouldn't say they're reliable.

I will never get a mazdaspeed 3, that car is way to $#@!ty.

My civic ran 15s, and the car was more fun than my 12.2 second BMW.

I vote gti. My mom has an a4 Quattro and that thing sips gas. I have yet to need to do any work to it besides oil changes and brakes. 60k on it now. It's a pretty good motor.

Civic si doesn't do as good on gas I thought. My buddy has one, Dan you met him at the track, and he averages about the same as I do with the 335. About 21-22 mpg

They are all small cars, but I'd pick the GTI for it can hold the most groceries and/or people/kids of any of these.

I say a Cooper S. What a fun car it is. The handling, steering, ride is just superb. The straight line performance is better than what you expect. But since it's a sub brand of BMW, it has BMW's issue like relatively expensive parts and some reliability problems.
To answer your question (R53 or newer R56) it depends on your needs.

R53 has better handling. Easier to mod. Sounds mentally good. linear power delivery. Looks better IMHO. Has LSD (late R53 models)
R56 has better MPG. Less expensive to repair and maintain. A bit faster than R53. Is built a little better.

I drove my friends turbo'd mini cooper s and damn that thing is fun as hell to drive, they started the turbo's in 07 anything pre 07 is supercharged. My friend says the older supercharged ones have a lot of head problems. Just something to think about.

Mini Cooper S is my vote.

My buddy has the supercharged version (some have turbos - forget if it's the older ones or the newer ones though) - and has an upgraded pulley (cost was cheap) - an exhaust/intake (1kish) - and suspension work (not sure on the price)...

This car was literally a street legal go-kart. It's the most nimble car I have driven - almost to the point where you laugh everytime you turn the wheel.

The numbers don't show how good the thing is - it's literally unbelievable. Performance off the line was not bad at all - he claimed 200 to the wheels - not sure if that's mini-horse or regular horse power though. Brakes were also outstanding, the car weighs very little. :-)

He had a few problems (electronic) with his - and like the Sorena mentioned above, the parts/labor aren't cheap.

Exactly. The R53 is the older model which is supercharged, the newer R56 is turbocharged.
