    Oil and silver shavings

    Hi all,

    I need some insight!

I just recently took off my HKS BOV and the charge pipe that came with it so I can take it to BMW for its second service interval, and once inspecting the pipe that was connected to the throttle body I seen a lot of oil, with this itself is not unusual the 2008 335i is known for this (I have the AR OCC kit so this will fix that once I install it) but I also notice that in the pipe with the oil there is silver shaving in it as well.

So I am guessing there shouldn't be any metal shaving in there and very little oil. (I had to add over a liter of oil over 3 months ago)

The car is running fine and I have not felt any power loss but when I did do my dyno test in the past everyone did mention that I should be pushing higher numbers then I did.

My car is still under warranty but how do I get BMW to check this out?

The car is back to stock and I am afraid to drive it (LOL) but I am going to drive more before I take it back to the dealer.

I need so insight with this and thanks in advance!

How many miles does your car have on it? A small amount of shavings are not uncommon with a new motor.

Well then, that should definitely not be happening.

I think you are doing the right thing by putting it back to stock and considering taking it to the dealer. I really don't know what could be causing the metal shavings to collect like that.

How do you plan on having the dealer check on it? I'm sure you don't have shavings or oil in your stock parts ...

Do you a SA? Is he cool? Is he honest with you / Can you be honest with him? ... If so then tell him the truth and see if they can find the problem.

My SA is really cool and I take care of him in the case that something goes wrong and I need his help.

    ... Best of luck

Well you tell the dealer the problem and you have them check it out? You aren't supposed to have shavings period that many miles in so something is up.

You have a warranty, it is their responsibility to check it out.

So what was the point of taking the Charge pipe and BOV off? ... So if he went down there with all the stock parts with no trace of oil or shavings then they would just say the car is fine. Now if he showed them his Charge pipe with the oil and shavings then they could say it was due/from the BOV. That is why I asked him how his SA was ...

I think you make a good point. If he takes the BOV off and says he check his charge pipe and there were shavings that may catch their attention. He can't go in there with his mods, that is for sure. Something is up and he needs to get to the bottom of it.

tell them you A. it came loose and when putting it back on, you noticed it. or B. you wanted to clean your system of all the oil and you noticed it. I would think if they are in you BOV pipe, its gonna happen in the stock stuff as well. unless its from said CP/BOV

The one mechanic said that BMW may realize that I had a tune on my car, so I may need a back up plan.

And I did check for all the codes with my BT professional tool, and these was none.

Ah yes, that makes sense, you saw shavings from the turbo.

Are you going to push it through warranty or upgrade the turbos?

I want to push it through warranty, I did check for codes with the BT tool but the one mechanic did say BMW would know I did tune it.

Yep, sounds like the old BMW knows everything spiel, you should be solid Far. I see the challenging part for you is BMW arriving at any conclusions of turbo failures without codes.

Again I am sorry for your troubles here, I hope everything works out well for you. I am sending positive energy your way.
