Another useless/pointless special edition E92 M3? BMWUSA reveals the 200 unit limited Lime Rock edition E92 M3

These special edition M3's are becoming basically pointless with a new seemingly released every week offering nothing more than already available packages with some different paint and interior accents. This M3 is $70,995 and basically amounts to a standard M3 with individual paint, alcantra trim, and the already available competition package. This M3 can join other useless "special editions" such as the M Performance M3 for the UK and the Competition Edition for the USA.

If BMWUSA wants to give us a special E92 M3 have them bring over the M3 GTS. Until then, they can stop wasting our time with these supposedly "special" M3's that are nothing more than a cheap money grab from 200 people who don't know any better.

A CELEBRATION OF THE DRIVING SPIRIT – THE BMW M3 COUPE LIME ROCK PARK EDITION.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – July 6, 2012 2:00pm EDT... BMW of North America today announced the 2013 M3 Coupe Lime Rock Park Edition, of which 200 copies will be built this summer. Priced from $70,995 including $895 Destination and Handling, the M3 Coupe Lime Rock Park Edition will be "...a classic car for a classic track," as described by Skip Barber, owner of the historic Lime Rock Park racing circuit located in northwestern Connecticut. BMW and Lime Rock Park have collaborated on the M3 Coupe Lime Rock Park Edition to celebrate the longstanding relationship between BMW automobiles, the famed Lime Rock Park racing circuit, and the thousands of passionate drivers and fans who join them together. Deliveries are planned to begin this September.

The BMW M3 Coupe Lime Rock Park Edition will be constructed on the foundation of the iconic BMW M3 Coupe, now in its fourth generation, with enhancements selected through collaboration with Skip Barber and Lime Rock Park. Each car will be painted in rare Fire Orange and features Anthracite and Black cloth seating with Nappa leather trim. The popular Competition Package is fitted, and the M3's signature carbon fiber composite roof panel will be retained on all copies produced. Also in the standard equipment profile will be a lightweight inconel-titanium exhaust muffler, carbon fiber front and rear aerodynamic aids, and an Anthracite Alcantara-covered, flat-bottom steering wheel. Finally, each M3 Coupe Lime Rock Park Edition will be quickly identified by a numbered plaque located on the center console, a unique decal on the left-rear quarter window, and a certificate of authenticity.

California-based racing driver Bill Auberlen, whose career has been synonymous with the BMW brand in America for 17 years and includes over 300 professional races in BMW cars, joined Skip Barber and Lime Rock Park management on July 3rd, 2012 to evaluate the prototype of the M3 Coupe Lime Rock Park Edition on the famed 1.5-mile circuit. Just a few days before starting his 100th American Le Mans Series race at Lime Rock Park, Auberlen remarked, "A race car is never allowed to be perfect. It's the job of the driver to constantly suggest improvements and find more speed. But the M3 Lime Rock Park Edition may be as close to perfect as you can get, right off the production line. From its great color to the flawless manners it showed on the track, for the first time I can say I might not change a thing."

The balanced, linear driving dynamics of the BMW M3 Coupe are often described as a perfect match for the challenging Lime Rock Park circuit. As described by track owner Skip Barber:

"A newcomer looks at the track map and thinks, 'Oh, this is easy.' It's not. Lime Rock is an extremely difficult track to drive quickly. It has three of what many drivers think are some of the most challenging corners in North America: The Uphill, West Bend and The Downhill," Barber said. "There are tricky cambers, extreme elevation changes, very high speeds... all Lime Rock signatures since it opened 55 years ago. And the BMW M3 Coupe Lime Rock Park Edition, when equipped with the six-speed manual, is geared perfectly – and I mean perfectly – for the track. I agree with Bill: I wouldn't change a thing."

Lime Rock Park is one of America's most recognized road racing venues and has been continuously operated since its opening in 1957. Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places by the National Park Service, the track is 1.5 miles in length, encompassing seven corners and more than seven stories of elevation change. The track is considered one of the most beautiful –and challenging to drive – in the world, constructed in a natural valley in the Berkshire Mountains of extreme northwest Connecticut. Is it possible to stroke or bore an S65 to a displacement of 5 liters without lowering the redline? Gut feeling says no but that would be bad ass and BMW would have killed it with such a motor in a special edition if it was making close to 500...

There is not much room to increase the bore but it can be stroked quite a bit. 4.7 liters is about the max.

I love the title of the article, haha.

The bummer part is that anyone can order this same exact spec from most dealers with BMW Individual experience and do Euro Delivery.

If BMW is going to make a "special edition" at least make it special enough where we can't possibly built it ourselves so easily. At any rate, I think this still might be my favorite special edition...

The target are not car enthusiasts, it's a regular guy with enough money to spend it on this car. He will never know how very not special that car is when compared to a regular M3. He will just know he's part of a special 200 club.

Don't worry, there's still at least 1 more "special edition" E9x M3 to come out when they celebrate the end of the S65 Click here to enlarge Then they'll be a ~6 months until the F32 M3 comes out which will hopefully be more like the E46 M3 than the F12 M6

Cool option for those already planning to buy an M3 and looking for that "look", but I doubt this will bring in many new buyers. I mean look at the M3 "Competition Edition". Cool color in frozen silver; nice features. They made 40 of those, and it took a long time for those to sell. They are making 200 of these?

Theres one at the dealer a few minutes from me. It does look so sick though with all the added extras. If I was buying new, I would consider it

No reason to consider it when buying new when you can knock so much off the price from a standard M3.

Yah, most dealers will be a pain in the ass with special editions and won't want to move. No reason to pay more than 1k over invoice on an M3 ordered to spec...various dealers will probably do better.
