Yes the stock manifold is all about packaging, if BMW wanted to they could have picked up another 30-40 hp easy but performance is the last thing on their mind. They need to meet EPA emissions, packaging, cost, shipping, manufacturability etc... performance is probably not even on their radar when they designed the intake, and they probably analyzed performance last after all other parameters were met.

you will have your collector and larger turbos soon

just have to wait for the new m3 comes out next year

There will have everything they want and everything will be much easier

anyway great respect for your project, if you manage to make a new collector I'll buy you quickly

The TB is HUGE which is a good thing. The problem is that the drive by wire components are huge too. John and I literally moved the TB around to see where it might fit, and moving it to the center-line of cyl's 1 & 2 is the best we can do. Any further forward and it will rest against the alternator, we don't want that ether. Ya, after spending a little time digging around a lot of stuff comes clear. I can now see why a lot of people have picked this up and stopped...it's hard, but doable. Click here to enlarge

Tilt the TB so it is facing the front of the car. Try and make it look like this.

Hey guys I have been really busy so I didn't have much extra time to spend on the simulations. I did begin putting together a new spreadsheet that captures valve events so I can use these boundary conditions for my transient flow simulation. I didn't forget about it.

beautiful man, looks legit to me! the gain will be truly noticeable only with increased cfm like a hybrid upgrade or the single option right? who will be the one to empirically test it? let me guess, DZ! Click here to enlarge

Theoretically it will make gains on stock turbos because I took the bottle neck out of the runners and moving the TB will help the cyl 4&5 bias, also I changed the angle of the runners to remove some of the cyl 1 dempel, but the dyno will tell the truth.

My favorite project on here. Please allow for secondary injection, at least one injector. I want to know what would happen if we get the JB4 to batchfire some fuel in there.

Here is the thing. Pulling a signal from the injectors will get tricky, which i think is why this project has been droped before, that and cost. If I'm going to do one injector, than I'm going to do six. When I get a "shop car" I'll work on that project.

Awesome project. I don't have an N54, but will still be interested to see this come to fruition.

    +1
The previous attempts did not get anything done at the end and their actual intake design was a lot worse.

I'm all for adding injectors at a later stage if the fueling would become a bottleneck and after the main function of the new intake has been proven to work well. However, I believe upgrading the LPFP is still a more straight forward solution for those who are not satisfied with the 700-800whp that the stock fueling system seems to be able to provide - with meth that is.

Ya, and just to add to your point, we don't need aux fuel until we start seeing BIG turbos and stroker motors. Until then, I just want something out in the market, then I can add to it's platform.

Here is the latest steady state result for Mats rev3 manifold (the one where I asked him to tilt the TB). There is much better flow distribution, qualitatively.

Quantatively there still needs to be more analysis done, given the fact mat wants to move forward with manufacturing, the only next design change I would suggest is tilt the TB even more, and move it farther away from the ports (move it to the right) to allow better diffusion and time for the air to make the turns. Overall this is a better design than stock and there should be good gains, but I would suggest more time and a couple more redesigns before I feel 100% confident in the design.

Moving the entry point downward (on the pic) would reduce the almost 180 degree turn that the air has to make to feel the #1 cylinder.
