Thumbs up S54 Low compression Build Begins

What does a spun rod bearing get you?

A scarred crank and a new adventure. Click here to enlarge

Saturday afternoon was the day we were supposed to finish my car. Fine tuning on the dyno. It was going very well all day up untill around 3 o'clock. We did probably 9-10 hard pulls all the way to red line. After the last pull, we shut the car off and started it back up. Upon start up, we heard an ear piercing noise that sounded like a spun bearing. Clack, clack, clack...

That was the end of that. Monday morning comes and I call up the dealership and order some bearings. Wednesday comes around and the dealer calls to say they have arrived. Ok, this is where the fun starts. Tonight I decided to begin the teardown to replace the rod bearings. It's a pain in the ass by the way... We checked the connecting rods for play and sure enough, the number 5 rod had massive play. We removed the cap and pulled off the bearings. This is when I knew I wouldn't get to drive my m3 for a while... Turns out the spun bearing scarred the crank badly. Looks like I'm going to need a new crankshaft. After about 5 minutes of deliberation, we decide to build the motor.

    The build will consist of:

    RMS low compression pistons 9.5:1
    Pauter rods
    V2-T trim supecharger
8 rib pulley setup for 17 psi
    Methanol Injection
RMS Big tube headers (1 3/4" primaries)
Custom exhaust from the headers back
    Sachs Racing clutch
    Possibly some bigger brakes

I'll keep this thread updated with pictures and more info as it unfolds. The down side, I need to get some cash together quick if I want to get this done in a reasonable amount of time.

    Wish me luck!

New crank has been purchased and is on it's way here. Next matter of business, purchasing rods and pistons.

Bro, please don't do this here. This is a build thread, not an "RMS sucks" thread.

Chris is not a bad guy. Yes, he works at RMS but isn't responsible for what took place there. That lies squarely with Osh. With that being said lets reserve judgment until we see the results. Good luck bro. Post updates.

Those are usually one and the same.

Go ahead and post your build, but no one has forgotten what Osh did to Abdullah. I told you that I would not support RMS and you are walking a thin line with advertising RMS for free. I think it would be best for you to refer to your build as your own build and not an RMS build.

Now let us all sit back and enjoy.

Ok sticky, I apologize. Could you please rename the thread, 'THATDONFC's S54 low compression build begins"

Not trying to advertise. Just want to share my adventures with the rest of the enthusiasts out there.

Call up Metric Mechanic and talk to Jim 573-765-1269. http://www.metricmechanic.com

They have a method in which they offset grind the crank in order to use some special coated "hardened" bearings. The end result is a stroke that is ever so slightly longer. They also have a special method of notching the pistons in order to gain tighter ring clearance. I would consider sending off my stuff to them to machine it for you..

The rods and piston combination they use is interesting and reduces weight considerably..

    Talk to them.. can't hurt!
