    -norm

    For all participants;

The gates open at 7am. Please try to time your arrival in the 7am time frame to reduce the congestion at the gate. We only have about an hour to register and finish tech. We ask that you be on time and move quickly through setup, tech and check-in so we can stay on schedule.

    At the track:

As you enter PIR, you will sign the BMW and PIR waiver forms. Everyone entering the premises must sign the waivers. If you a registered participant for the event you will also receive your registration/tech form.

    • Find a place to park in the paddock and prep your car for the tech inspection.

We prefer trailers to be parked to the west of the fast track café to help keep the sight lines to the pre grid from the tower clear.

    • Drive your car to the tech line, with your registration/tech form and helmet.

Stay with your car until you have completed tech. Please do not put your car in the tech line and walk away. This can cause a disruption of the tech process.

    • All vehicles must pass the at track inspection

    • Once you have a completed tech form, please take your documentation to registration (typically in the Rose Cup room). At registration, you’ll finalize payment and receive your car number.

Put your car number on your car. If you only have one number set it will go in the center of the windshield/windscreen. If you have two number sets then one will go on the center of the windshield and the other would go on the driver’s side rear window.

    What about driver's meetings?

We will hold two driver’s meetings:

We have two mandatory drivers meetings; one at 8:15am and at 12:45pm. We will explain the on track safety procedures, flags and passing rules. You will get updates on the track conditions, any changes in rules from what we have published in this document and an update on any open issues.

    Passing Rules:

We will be using graduated passing rules for 2012 at this event (these are the same passing rules used at ORPCA events).

    Novice and Intermediate Run Groups:

    • Passing will be allowed on the front straight between turn 12 exit and the double cones before the braking zone for turn one. Passing on the back straight between turn 8 and the double cones before the braking zone for Turn 10.

Front straight passing is on the right side of the car being overtaken Back Straight passing is on the left side of the car being overtaken.

    Advanced Run Groups:

    • Passing will be allowed on the front straight between turn 12 exit and the double cones before the braking zone for turn one. Passing on the back straight between turn 8 and the double cones before the braking zone for Turn 10.
    • Passing is also allowed between Turn 3 and Turn 4. Passing is on the right side of the car being overtaken. This is a pretty short zone, and requires cooperation between drivers.

Front straight passing is on the right side of the car being overtaken.
Turn 3/4 passing is on the right side of the car being overtaken.
Back Straight passing is on the left side of the car being overtaken.

Potential Addition: (passing rule will be discussed at the drivers meetings at the event):

    • Passing is allowed between Turn 6 and Turn 7. Passing is on the right side of the car being overtaken.

    Instructor Run Group:
The Instructor/Expert Run group allows passing anywhere with a point by.

The standard passing conventions should be followed in this group:

Front straight passing is on the right side of the car being overtaken.
Turn 3/4 passing is on the right side of the car being overtaken.
Turn 6/7 passing is on the right side of the car being overtaken.
Back Straight passing is on the left side of the car being overtaken.

If given a point by cars are expected to alter their line and speed accordingly so that both cars can safely go through a corner with no drama for either car.

    Passing Safety:

No Passing in corners and the Car being overtaken stays on line (except Instructor Group).

The overtaking car is responsible for passing safely:

    • If you are unsure that you can execute a safe pass within the rules proscribed above, back off and try again at the next safe opportunity.

    All passes require a point-by:

    • The car being passed in order to acknowledge that he/she is aware of the pass. If you do not clearly see a point-by, do not pass. This rule is largely self-enforced and demands cooperation between drivers. It also helps to raise the situational awareness of all drivers, which contributes to greater safety for all participants.

    The Point by takes Precedence:

    • You must pass on the side of the car where the driver of the car being overtaken has pointed. If you are unsure of the driver’s intent, back off and try again at the next safe opportunity.

If you find yourself inadvertently passing in a corner the two drivers involved are required to treat the track like a two lane street and share the pavement until one can safely take the lead again. Should this situation arise make sure to report to the black flag station where you get to explain why you ended up violating our passing rules and passed in a corner.

If you come upon a very slowly moving car (way off the run group pace) that points you by you may pass it provided it is safe to do so.

    Track Safety is everyone's responsibility.

    Stop at the Pre-grid black flag station for help with on track issues, for example;

    • If there is a driver that fails to point by repeatedly.
    • If the driver being overtaken prevents you from completing the pass • If you find a driver that is clearly driving over their head.
    • If you notice and unsafe condition anywhere on the driving surface.

If you notice and unsafe condition anywhere on the premises please notify a Portland BMW Club staff member immediately so we can deal with it immediately. Help is always available at track control on the second floor of the tower.

Our goal is for everyone to have a great time at these events. You are the most important part in making sure that we reach that goal.

We look forward to seeing everyone on Monday.

I'm running in the Advanced Group. This event has point bys. I have always preferred running without point bys and leaving it up to the passing car to navigate the pass. But we will go out and have a good time.

I'll have 4 Go Pro Cameras and One VBOx. I'm going to overlay the VBox data with the videos. Click here to enlarge

It is meant to go round corners.
For straight line speed take an AMG.
There is a reason the Ring Taxis are BMW's.

We have different definitions of forever. Going around corners is nice and all, but all M3's can do that.

The idea that AMG's are better for straight line speed is stupid.

The car can, but can the driver?

AMG's will do a roadcourse, only sideways. All tests confirm this. There is no denying.

I said all M3's and you just agreed. If a driver doesn't want to use his car on the roadcourse that is his decision. I don't see a law that states the M3 has to be used only on a roadcourse. Plus, it's gotten too heavy.

I'm not saying the big heavy AMG's are good roadcourse cars I'm saying the idea that an AMG should be used for straightline speed rather than a BMW when all the numbers thus far have BMW's being the superior straight line option is stupid.

you can make any car go fast. some are more of a pain in the ass to get really fast (like bmws haha, right sticky?) but i could build the worlds fastest car given enough money. ford fiesta, or geo metro ....whatever. but can it whip scary hard?
throttle response and handling, period. if i stab it out of a corner and i don't feel enough=needs more power, too slow/boring. if i do the same thing and its kicking left and right=less power, too sloppy/stupid.

I'm with David. I like to use steering wheel and pedals, not just pedals. That's why i choose tracks over strips.

Whatever. I like acceleration when I'm not doing that or am in a position where it isn't possible. Cars can do lot's of things.

Learned a lot about Yokohama slicks today. They definitely don't work cold. At first it was driving like an ice skating rink. On my last session I got them to 150-165-175 from inner to outer on the fronts and very similar in the rear. The car was lifting the front tire about 2" exiting the turns so they were definitely gripping. The GoPro batteries went dead on the last pass and the only footage I have is one of the rear cameras. But my laps were a bit slower than last time as we were still getting fuel starvation on hard braking. So we will have to run a surge tank. Crap.
    Chris.
