N54 aFe "Elite" Stage 2 Sealed Intake - Review

Today I received the aFe snorkel kit to upgrade to their Elite Stage 2 SI or Sealed Intake ( 50-81472 ). The aFe snorkel kit is a direct replacement of the stock snorkel which allows smoother air flow and removing the restrictions that was inherent in the stock snorkel.
For those of you have been following from since my first initial review of the aFe Stage 2 Sealed Intake stand alone airbox. I did make some modificatons to the stand alone airbox by completely and affectively sealing the airbox air tight allowing aboslutely no hot air from the engine bay to get in.
By doing this I also increased the CFM air flow at the stock storkel mouth. The air flow was also aided by the aFe air scoops.

After the install I took the car for a 30 min spin and found I have a new member added to turbo spooling orchestra. I can now hear the air being sucked into snorkel mouth.
I have a basline dyno scheduled for next week Friday, results will be added to this new post.
Until then this weeks the new intake will be put to its howling test at the Palm Beach International Raceway private event coming this Sunday May 6th 2012.
Make sure to subcribe to this thread to get updated on my review as progression is made.

Great! Looking forward to your results. I'm still running the stock intake as there will be no "hot air intake" on my car! Thanks for sharing your findings with the community.

Very cool, the benefits might not even be that big on the dyno but more so at higher speeds where the high pressure zone builds up in front of the snorkel.

Other people eat shit and die.

I'm not racist, I hate everybody equally; especially fat people.

Great intake that's for sure BUT the price is prohibitive for what you'll get in the end I think

What intake does the fastest RB cars run? I think LM was DCI, are you running aMR.5 intake or DCI yourself?

The snorkel kit "upgrade" should be the difference if you were to buy Stage 2 Elite SI which runs about $834.75 directly from aFe. There are other vendors that sell it below $800, group buys are even less.......Not 1k.

For example; If you paid $519.75 for the stand alone air box ie the Stage 2 SI, then you will only pay the difference of $315.00 for the snorkel kit that comes with the aFe air scoops, bolts, screws, and bracket.

The material is not cheap, it very strong and durrable and is coated on the inside like the aFe air box.

Please keep in mind that ALL results are based on my modifcation made to the intake as mention in the OP. aFe will be mirroring my example adding a gaskit seal for the stage 2 air box to make it completely air sealed.

"Rumor" has it a stage 3 enthusiast version will be coming soon as the airbox and intake tube will be one peace and size will probably be increased of the filter and filter mouth, snorkels....Just a rumor at this time, nothing official.

A rip off IMO but nice intake nonetheless. I just hate the fact that you have to do some work in order to make it fully sealed, specially for that price.

Think of it as a donation to the community Click here to enlarge . aFe will make the improvements, no doubt. It took this long cause there was no one to criticize the design "constructively" and to present it to them base on the wants and needs of BMW enthusiasts.

@BuraQ, next step, please talk to them about some upgraded intake piping...basically to solve the neck down at the compressor inlets, and make the price "affordable"...they seem to have great plastic fab capabilities

For RB turbos we don't want ANY neckdown as the compressor inlet inner diameter is larger than stock, outer diameter is the same..thanks, cheers Click here to enlarge

Had alot off fun today, got to run my car 35 times....talk about testing a tune. I was borrowed a DashDyno by one of the coordinators of the private event. It was my first time using such a device so it took a while to figure it out and to setup what I wanted to look at. I had no idea how to log the thing so I had to go by what I saw on the log and noted it after every run

    1. 35 Runs (two last times with my wife)
    2. AFM @ WOT 138-142 avrg / Peak 160
    3. Ambient Temps 91-92 degrees
    4. Intake Temps 108 - 123 (normal driving and idle) / @ WOT 132-138 degrees
    5. ET Consistency 12.2 @ 113-114 mph
    6. Best time 12.23 @ 115 mph

I was really supprised that I did that good in such weather conitions. The second fastest N54 was an E90 runnning JB4 Map 7, DP's, DCI, fuel mix of E85, and first time at the track.

Here are two other time slips during peak temps and that are my best ET 12.2. The aFe intake came in a nick of time for this hot event.

Yup the change was the cold air intake system. My first run in the morning I did 1.88 60, after that the slicks and DRs tore up the asphalt that became all slushy

You don't pay attention, do you?

They tune more than just Benz but that is where they made their name. They have branched out considerably.

It seems i don't. Well it's good, having more tuners is always better.

OP, How's the DCT holding up so far? What TQ are you pushing to the wheels?

Good to meet you, man. Car looks good and didn't seem as bothered by the heat as mine did. Great time finally being able to run my car, though.
