It's cool looking, but pretty busy/aggressive looking. More like a suped up Japanese car than an understated M car IMHO.

No these are by far the worst renderings I have seen.

I hope the M4 doesn't look like that.

I think it's too busy as well and not very innovative.

Of course I didn't mean to imply that any of us were confused, I was just pointing out that the new naming scheme is actually more logical and fits better with the rest of BMW's lineup. I really don't care whether they keep all of them as the 3 series or split them into the 3 and 4 series.

One nice benefit of this is the successor to the 1 M Coupe can be named M2 without BMW purists crying foul over the desecration of the M1's name.

They proved they pay attention to history when they did not name it m1. This should prove they could keep m3 coupe.

Three of these are creations AFTER the M3 existed. BMW never decided on doing this before and it certainly isn't necessary to throw their history away. If they were going to, why 1M instead of M1?

Eh, what about 503, 508, 507? The real 328 and 327? Or 1500 and 1800 and 2000? Or 1602, 2002, 2500, 2800? Or the 3.0 or the Bavaria? Or the Dixie or the Isetta? You see, there is sometimes more consistency in the earlier designations. But they are all gone. BMW did not start with the 320i, which my friend described as a car designed to be assembled my Turkish immigrants.

As the the M1, all you need to do is go back to the 80's to see one. Hence, the 1 Series M, or 1M for short. Here, the M2 makes a lot more sense. Think it will have an S designated motor this time?

True, these sort of existed before we had 3,5,6,7,8 though.

Why would BMW even do a 3 Series coupe if the idea was to have even numbers be coupes? It never was, 3,5,6,7,8 reflected size and position in the lineup. They were not designed to designate the number of doors. This is change for the sake of change that isn't necessary. Throwing away the M3 coupe history is just... well, it makes me angry.

that was no real proof, they simply do what fits better to their needs and point it out to the pubblic to get the best marketing effect they can.
    - So no M1: "proof to be hystorical"
    - some years ago it had to be NA to be sporty
    - now it has to be turbo for better mileage and to be green
    - m3 m4 renaming for better overview
    - light cars are sporty, handling is important and now look at the weight figures of an X5M / X6M
    - diesel where a nogo at M and now they are coming
    - AWD was a nogo at M and now they are coming
    - fwd is coming... while it never siuted to the bmw philosophy
    - bmw vans are coming

there are tons of examples like this.
BMW has a big plan in mind and they dont care about anything of the above points, they do what it needs to sell more and get bigger (and not beeing surpassed by audi).
The BMW marketing does the rest making every decision look the best ever, its just that simple.(you can justify every thing, and you will always find some followers. If not enough people in the BMW rows than simply some people swapping over from audi or other companies for exactly that reason.)
If they see that army tanks are a good thing for building up additional business without compromising the business they already have (i doubt so!), they will build them and even give it an M badge for the more powerful ones.... nothing more and nothing less.

I like the new naming scheme makes more sense since they are different chasis anyway. I think the Audi naming scheme works perfectly and BMW wants to grab the Audi crowd. I highly doubt the M division will use the 1M front bumper styling and those butt ugly side grills.

They defied convention specifically to avoid calling the car M1. That is why it is the 1M. The actual name of the car avoiding encroachment on the M1 name is not proof to you that BMW is aware of the M1 and what it means? Really?

Yep, this is all a load of crap. Front wheel drive BMW's when BMW would make fun of front wheel drive, unbelievable.

Yep, they sold out. I've been saying this for a while now.
