Audi takes pole for DTM Hockenheim race

Ekstrom takes pole for DTM season opener at Hockenheim

Mattias Ekstrom claimed pole position for the opening round of the 2012 DTM with a storming lap at Hockenheim, while BMW's Dirk Werner caused a shock by making it onto the second row.

Ekstrom produced a controlled lap of 1m34.680s in Q4 while the other three drivers that made it into the final part of qualifying all made mistakes that cost them a shot at pole.

HWA Mercedes driver Jamie Green had been fastest in Q3 and therefore was the last to take to the track in Q4, but locked his brakes up at Turn 2, missing the apex. Althogh he recovered some of the lost time in the remainder of the lap, he wound up 0.215 seconds adrift of Abt Audi driver Ekstrom, who claimed his 20th DTM pole.

Schnitzer driver Werner ran wide at the Spitzkehre on his Q4 lap, but was still able to take third on the grid on BMW's series return, ahead of Edoardo Mortara, who ran wide at the Nordkurve in his Rosberg Audi.

Following the session, both Werner and Mortara had their Q4 times taken away after the BMW left the pitlane while the red light was still on and the Audi man had his wide moment judged to have been 'exceeding the track limits' by race officials. As Werner had been faster in Q3, these penalties had no effect on either man's grid position.

Mike Rockenfeller was the first driver to post a time in Q3, but the Phoenix Audi returnee saw his name tumble down the timesheets as the 10 minutes drew by. His time put him fifth on the grid, ahead of HWA's Gary Paffett, the RBM BMW of impressive rookie Andy Priaulx and Timo Scheider's Abt Audi.

Bruno Spengler, who set the pace in Q2, will start ninth in his Schnitzer BMW, ahead of defending champion Martin Tomczyk's RMG-run example.

Ralf Schumacher was the biggest casualty of Q2, the HWA Mercedes driver being knocked out of the crucial 10th spot by Priaulx after the chequered flag had come out. One place behind him was Abt's Adrien Tambay, who impressively outqualified his Audi stablemates Filipe Albuquerque (Rosberg) and Miguel Molina (Phoenix) on his series debut.

The main moment of drama in Q1 came in the dying seconds when RMG BMW driver Joey Hand, at that point 19th and heading out of the session, leapt up to seventh on his final lap, knocking out Molina. Hand eventually qualified 16th.

DTM 1st race of the season: Hockenheim

The first race of the season is done.
It was a fun race to watch, and interresting to see where BMW, Audi and Mercedes stands in this new year, with all the new regulations.
This year there are no old spec cars, all cars are newly designed, 2 door coupe's
There is less downforce available, instead the tires are wider, 4cm for the front tires, and 6cm for the rear tires.
There is no refueling this year, instead all cars have a 120l fuel tank.
The pits crew is halved, but the Audi team proved still capable of a 3.1 seconds tire change today!

    So the race.
It was a real shame Ralf Schumacher drove Tomchick right out the race after 2 laps.
That would have been a good comparisin of DTM experienced drivers and caars. Instead Andy Priaulx drove a good race for BMW, finishing 6th, just not able to overtake Rockefeller in the last few laps.
In the front Gary Paffett drove a strong race, Jamie Green clinching 2nd.
Forst Audi was Ekstrom at 20 seconds.
Joey Hand did the most remarkable action in the race, giving himself a drivethrue after missing his pitbox completely during his pitstop.
The BMW pitcrew needs to train more for their stops in general. BMW cars just lost too much time in the pits.

    Threads merged.

We have to figure out if we want 3 separate articles from each manufacturers perspective or just one thread and whoever wins the race gets the front page article.

    Mmm, complicated.
Why not just post it in General Automotive, since it affects Audi, BMW and Mercedes.
Strange thing, I posted right after the race, but timestamp (04-29-2012, 07:55 AM) says M3_WC had the results 6 hours before the race even started Click here to enlarge

Forum is doing some weird stuff lately.

I guess we will just do 1 thread per race now and just promote posts from it wherever it seems most logical.

I was attending the race at Hockenheim and it was amazing to see the new DTM cars in action. A lot of BMW fans found their way to the circuit to welcome BMW back in business!
Of course my hopes were high for BMW to finish on the podium and it was a shame to see the cars in good positions get kicked out early on, mostly by Ralf Schumacher. So the race was decided between Gary Paffett and Jamie Green, with Ekstrom not being able to keep up with the pace of the Mercedes duo.

Hopefully BMW will be more lucky next weekend at the Lausitzring!

Yeah, Ralf really deserved 2 drive thrue penalties for that in stead of just one.
    All cars look awesome!
I was actually really surprised BMW did so well. They totally matched the pace of the Audis
Although RS had a drivethrue, he was still really fast, fast enough to overtake Coulthart.

Remember BMW only enters with 6 cars instead of 8 for Audi and Mercedes.
And the highest qualified BMW, and 2011 champion Tomczyk got taken out by Ralf Schumacher in lap2, so he could have been higher up.
I think BMW never thought they would finish 6th in their first race.

Why does BMW have 6 versus 8?

BMW hopes lied on Werner starting in 3rd. He had a terrible start, he was in 6th before the first turn. It went downhill from there.

No one had anything for Paffett or Green in the AMG's anyways. They were the class of the field that day. Ekstrom in the Audi started on pole, but didn't have the pace to put up a fight.

Funding and development capacity as far as I know.
They have been able to create 3 teams, BMW team Schnitzer, BMW Team RBM and BMW Team RMG.

Actually, the only one that had around the same pace was Ralf Schumacher.
He just put himself in a bad spot because he rammed the nose off Tomczyk an later on caused another collision and got a drive thrue penalty. Made it back to 7th though.
