I'm ok with people that work in car business and don't know anything about cars. But I am not ok with people that work in car business, don't know $#@! about cars, and try to act like they do. THAT is when I unload on them.

Well if you look at it from their point of view then it makes total sense. First and last car companies are about making money, nothing else, just money. Customer service and all that $#@! goes right out the window when you finally purchase that car (as we have found out many times.) 2nd of all the market is people who buy cars to move from point A to point B with slightly sprinkled car enthusiasts here or there. So in the end we have people who know nothing about cars selling them to people who know nothing about cars.

They know what the brochure tells them. The service dept. is the same thing, the "bmw authorized specialist engineering mechanic wizard" only knows what errors the computer spits out and tells him to replace what parts. I noticed if you tell them something about a noise that wasn't there before, if the computer doesn't spit out the error code then there is no "noise" it's your imagination.

I think it would be impossible for every service advisor to know even the basics of car knowledge, you wouldnt find anyone to work for you. Service advisors read the manual, tell you what the code was and tells the tech what to replace, that's it. If you ask him a question like "do you think my car could benefit from a limited slip differential" is chinese and he will probably have a seizure. Unfortunately, seb is right, they are not hired to know anything about the $#@! they sell you, they just need to sell it to you.

When at a dealer or something of that sort I have learned to remain happy with the knowledge I know more about their cars than they do. No point in even engaging in a discussion.

Slightly off topic but I think this is just a symptom of the overall disease. Most people don't know $#@! about cars. It drives me crazy at work when I overhear intelligent people speak like absolute morons about cars and really like boring, lifeless cars. I used to try to educate them but I have been biting my tongue as of late. Most people have never even driven a rwd car! Click here to enlarge

Rant over. Back on topic, I assume the rant above helps explain why people who don't know crap about cars can sell them....because the buyer doesn't know $#@! about cars!

PS: that is what is slowly killing cars! Its people who don't know and don't care (the majority of consumers).
