    FFTEC Tears Down N54

    Hi guys,

I ended up quickly browsing through the FFTEC Motorsports gallery of pictures from their teardown of Shiv's N54. I saw something that made me wonder:

Does this look like cyl 1 took a dump? Blown o-rings maybe?

Hard to tell, is that rust? Is the block sleeved?

Block is sleeved, and yes, that looks like rust. But it also shows some weird wear patterns in the rust as well.

Clean the top of the pistons and look for metal discoloration as signs of detonation.

What about the piston rings? They could have let go without detonation, correct? I suspect the reason why Shiv is tearing down his engine is because he did a compression test, found out that cyl 1 has low compression. Again, this is just a suspicion so that's why I thought I'd ask how does cyl 1 look to you guys.

This is not Shiv's motor. It is a low mileage engine from a salvage yard. The car was in a fire. Engines will rust when left outside to the elements over time. The engine has a 11/07 build date and had only 20,000 miles on a stock car. After the engine is torn down and hot tanked this rust will no longer be present.

Yeap, lets not give shiv any reason to think more of what he accuses people here of. Its a spare block which was very clearly stated on e90post.

Folks, I misunderstood, that's all. FFTEC is doing the work for Vishnu, I've seen Shiv posting pics of his car without an engine and then I put the two together. Honestly, I did not know that he picked up that motor from a salvage yard, so I assumed it was his.

8500 rpms on DI. That would be impressive indeed. Perhaps he should apply as an engineer at BMW Click here to enlarge

lol why? With the proper turbo you can make more power at a lower RPM without the extra risk and headaches of running higher RPMs.

Power. Not to mention you can have a laggier, higher flow-rate setup but still have a "fat" torque curve if you do it right.

Basically having full boost from 2500-6500RPM would be like full boost from 4500-8500RPM on the same motor, but the 8500RPM motor is obviously going to have a lot more power assuming the right design.

Maybe if you're talking about throwing in 4.56s gears to match it might be livable but with a turbo platform on a motor that already has a good VE throughout it's power band I'd much rather have the torque at lower RPM with gearing to match. These cars run drama free 11.0s with 2nd gear launches and I think could go much faster with the right setup. Throw some big cams on and shift that power band up along with the drop in CR needed and it's going to become a total unresponsive slug during normal driving IMHO. Now if you're turbo limited sure then you have no other choice.

Can be done but most of the internals will be upgraded and personally I would not call it N54. I would not call some fully built S54 engines S54 either tjough since they might not have a single stock S54 internal....

I don't think he was serious about that right now. At this point it's more like that would be the dream setup.

Maybe because he can't get enough fuel out of the procede down low? So build the engine instead and raise RPMs? lol

I'm enjoying the fear mongering over the N20 map sensor and running 22+ psi, "better think twice" ... I want to ask why but I can't phrase it in a way that will avoid my post being deleted over there.
