    n54 engine build?

shiv posted this ten days ago on e90. thought I'd share as it will hopefully benefit all of us N54 guys Click here to enlarge

With horsepower levels already approaching 700whp, it won't be too long before we are knocking on BIG power numbers. So we are getting ready with our own in-house engine program. We sourced a stock low mileage short block that is already in the process of getting cleaned and torn down. Then it will be put under scrutiny to find its weakest links and learn how we can improve upon it. My prediction is that it won't be long until there are 1000+whp N54s on the road Click here to enlarge

Different suppliers? I thought only BMW made this motor.

since that other thread has gotten a bit out of hand i figured i'd post shiv's new post he made yesterday. more comparison with the 4g63 rod/piston:

Here are some more pics of the n54 piston/rod. A few tidbits:

The cylinder walls (on the block) are tapered. Very cool. So BMW accounted for the difference directional stresses during operation.

The wrist pin is also tapered so it is considerable thicker/stronger than what appeared first glance.

The small end of the rod is thicker at the top. This wasn't detectable until we separated it from the piston. As the width of the rod reduces, the thickness increases. So it looks like we might have initially sold the a little short. It may, in fact, have more material around the wrist pin than the 4G63 rod!

The upper piston ring is thicker than the lower piston ring. In the 4G63 piston, it is the opposite.

The rest of the pistons are out for steam cleaning. This one is a bit rusty.

a question, if the piston rust, and they are cast, are we really using cast iron pistons? Doesn't it seem a little 1800 century? They must be very heavy at least?

The rust came from the cylinder liners as they are lined with a hybrid iron material.

The pistons, if they are cast, would be cast aluminum not iron.

The discoloration is from the dried up oil. It will stain metal until washed. Once these pistons and rods are washed along with the block, everything will look almost like new.

    All makes sense.

    Those watermarks are beyond annoying.

So this engine isn't the one that was in the car where he was doing the 627HP dyno and whatnot? It seemed like those posts died off really quick. Makes me wonder if something happened to his engine. Also, this engine looks like the same open deck cylinder setup like Hondas, so should someone make a blockguard for it?

This is a salvage yard engine taken from a 2008 11/07 335i. This is not Shiv's single turbo engine. Shiv's engine is still in the car and running perfectly fine. This is a 2nd engine bought for R&D.

The cylinder walls look very thick compared to Honda engines. I am curious as to how far this block can be pushed without a block guard. I'm not sure if Shiv will be doing a block guard on this block.

I wonder if just lower compression pistons and better rods will allow this engine to be pushed into the 1000hp range. I guess time will tell.
