No no, he gave them to his mechanic friend. All I'm saying is after the "joke" was over, his story seems the same as he told me when it first happened. Question I have is how long would it take to break something without oil? Will just idling for 5 minutes do it?

Think of all the components that require oil pressure to operate properly and avoid damage. 600-800 RPM idle is still very fast movement.

    Much faster than that.

I work at an insurance company and have seen files where people hit a rock on the road and the oil pan got damaged, losing all oil. Maybe 10-30 seconds later you get the red engine oil dash light. Unfortunately, in most cases teh wife (sorry ladies...) continues to drive Click here to enlarge until, surprisingly, the engine is seized and the internals have turned blue due to the friction and heat... Update:

    - Turned out to be a bad lifter. Although the rod had some play, it was not the factor causing the knock. Not sure how the lifter went bad after only 70K, but it did. I'll post a video of the noise one I find my iPhone.

    - Car was fixed up and sold a few days back, glad to have it out of my hair. No more N54/55's for me again.

Blisstik, how do you like my AE exhaust? Click here to enlarge

No man. Everyone thought it was a spun rod bearing, I had 4 mechanic look at it. The sound was coming from that area and it was a pretty loud knock. We were kinda surprised it began knocking within minutes after replacing the rod bearing. So after more digging around, found out it was only the lifer. All that work for a simple 4 hour job. Hopefully this goes as a lesson learned for everyone, don't assume it's a spun rod bearing. I will say though, there was some wiggle in it, I wouldn't doubt these need to be replaced at 100K+ miles with higher HP engines.

Last time I was on the dyno I heard loud knock from that area as well after a cooldown but it went away fast. I guess valve lifter is in the near future to be replaced or readjusted but I have no idea why a bad valve lifter would cause the serious issues you were describing before.

the ticking is normal, it is caused by the piezoelectric injectors (your DI system). what that video had which was noticeable was when the camera moved away from the motor, that ticking that got more apparent (the DI noise faded) is knock, it is much louder. up close the two sounds kind of blend. so, if you can hear the ticking far away it's probably knock, up close, it's normal.
