Lightbulb Piston Rings 101 - Forensics on Marcus Blown M3 Engine

Marcus (the owner of the blue M3 and original HPF customer who ran the ProEFI EMS w/850rwhp on his HPF Stage 3 Turbo System) has definitely been extremely patient and has been without his car for quite some time. Now his motor is blown and he's looking for answers and will be having it rebuilt and retuned.

I watched the video Saad and Jason made about their failure in their Supra 2JZGTE engine but there was no information presented by the machine shop Saad uses or by Saad and Jason about their failures with the S54 motor including Chad's motor, Marcus' motor or the motor failure of Jason's personal M3.

Since we openly show videos and pics of the blown motors we see, we took a more comprehensive look at Marcus' motor with specific attention to the rings as Jason pointed out an improperly set up motor could cause the top ring to bind and cause piston damage. To provide a more detailed analysis we looked at the ring gaps on all of the cylinders in Marcus' motor and discussed the role each ring has. We looked at cylinder #5 again as this was the cylinder that had the most leak, but we also paid a bit more attention to cylinder #4 as that cylinder had all of it's rings intact with a 46% leak but also showed initial signs of piston damage.

Cylinder Failure Diagnosis at 26:00 in the video

At the end of Jason's last video posted http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=909108, they talk about no motor being resistant to a bad tune. This should be a warning to anyone who wants to have someone tune their car whether it has an HPF motor or not.

    Chris.
Broken 2nd ring from the install, sounds like something I said when this first went down. This has been one of the better videos you've made. I give you props for having an open mind to the situation and going back on what you said. That's not something that's easy to do. I do not blame hpf at all if it was a broken 2nd ring that caused this, $#@! happens. Interested to see how you work this out with Marcus, even though he decided to pull the car from hpf. I give you a thumbs up.
