Just to get a starting point and base understanding:
INPA is the software link between ediabas and your computer
Cable needed is DCAN which can be usb or serial
Inpa lets you interface and some basic coding options but we need NCS for more in depth coding?

    Cool DZ! Good to hear

You're right about INPA..cable is USB on one end, OBD on the other end...INPA lets you diagnose many things on the car as well as code things such as injectors...NCS can code a lot more from what i've seen...using NCS i was able to code my amber sidemarkers off on the front, code DRLs off, code the tail light errors off as i've done an LCI rear conversion, coded the seat belt chime off and coded my braille battery to the lowest supported output AGM bettery from bmw to provide for better battery charge management

    JoshBoody,

    It's the other way around...

EDIABAS is a set of protocols and communication tools which allow your computer to actually talk to your car. Think of it as the BT Tool USB Driver Software.

INPA contains scripts, or routines of commands which allow you to do basic controller interactions and activations. Think of it as BMW's OEM equivalent of the BT Tool.

NCSExpert is the full blown tool set which uses the EDIABAS layer to program and code in the various controllers.

The communication layers go like this:

Car <--> USB dongle <--> EDIABAS <--> INPA

So far I've not messed with NCSExpert at all. That'll be my next step. I needed to resolve this misfiring issue. NCSExpert will delivery the bonus: being able to code various controllers in my car.

Gotcha, thanks Vas. Its all very intimidating. Probably just getting the computer setup more than the actual interface. All these files are created for setup from a CD, so we have to manipulate them a little i assume. The TIS was hard enough and i can only get it to work on one computer with a little luck.

There's also a program in the same collection that can rewrite and flash i think... At least for the older models.

mississauga touched them first, then autohaus, then an independent shop last...these guys in the end had issues "coding" the car for a bit and then told me they figured it out and coded them...i only paid the last shop about $90 for coding, the earlier ones were warranty...

i really wonder how many cars are running around with badly coded injectors...its ridiculous Click here to enlarge

    Josh,

No worries. I found it bit overwhealming myself and I am an IT guy. Ultimately, when I am done, I'll just create a ready-to-use VMWare machine which you can download, plug your cable in and go!

can you simplify the coding for the cars? I have the cable, but from that im lost (i know its not anywhere near as important as whats being discussed now though)

First off congrats for having this working... amazing that all those missfires issues were related by bad coded injectors ... Dzenno you should go down there a burn the place after 1 year of headaches.

Would be great to have a easy working solution. I actually had the vmware working on my laptop but i did not realize you should run always the vmware to make it work...

    Awesome work Vasillalov.
But where do you get the correct values from for your injectors?

If you mean coding via INPA, just look at the video I posted. As for coding with NCSExpert, as I said before, I've not messed with this yet but it is next on the list. I don't know how it is going to work out so I don't want to make any promises.

Also, quite the variance between the injectors. 2.06-2.44 mg/strk can be quite large at high rpms. DZ if your injector 1 fell outside this window, I can see why you would misfire predictably. Otherwise, for units with question marks, would the DME use the average values across the remaining 5?

This means that the injector will be protruding into the combustion chamber further down and possibly sit closer to the spark plug. ...and we wonder why we are getting misfires left and right...
When I coded the one I replced it was misscoded as well. So it seems dealerships around the world suck!
